LATHAM -- Norman L. Bernard, 84, of Latham, beloved husband for 59 years to Elvira Ventrella Bernard, died Thursday night, May 26, 2005, at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Mr. Bernard was born in Jay, Maine, the son of the late Arthur and Irma Samson Bernard. He graduated from Livermore Falls High School in Livermore Falls, Maine, and earned his bachelor's degree in education from Clark University in Worcester, Maine. Mr. Bernard was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He retired from International Paper Co. in Corinth in 1982, after 37 years of service as a personnel manager. Mr. Bernard was a resident of Latham since 1985, where he was a communicant of St. Ambrose Church in Latham. He also was a member of the Colonie Elks Lodge No. 2192 and the Latham Senior Citizens Bowling League. In addition to his beloved wife, Elvira, he is also survived by his loving children: Norma Zambardino and her husband, James, of Latham, Arthur Bernard and his wife, Thespina, of Bernardsville, N.J., and Mary Haley and her husband, Mark, of Plattsburgh. He is also survived by his six cherished grandchildren: James Zambardino, Amy Zambardino, Alexander Bernard, Jennifer Bernard, Michael Haley and Daniel Haley; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 29, at Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham. Interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Livermore Falls, Maine. Boyle, 88, of 460 James St., King of Prussia, Pa., formerly of Lansford, Pa. and Easton, Pa., died Saturday, May 28, 2205, at Montgomery Hospital in Norristown, Pa. He was the husband of the late Pauline E. Gazo Boyle, who died Dec. 26, 2004. Born in Lansford, Pa., he was the son of the late Morgan and Nellie O'Donnell Boyle. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a master sergeant with the 481 Anti Aircraft Artillery, serving in the European Theatre, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe as a communication chief, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, American Defense Service Medal and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars. He worked for PP&L for 40 years in Hauto and Martins Creek, Pa., retiring in 1979. He was a member of Mother of Divine Providence Roman Catholic Church, King of Prussia, Pa. He was a former member of the Holy Name Society of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Lansford, Pa., a founding member of the Lansford Little League, Men of Marian and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include two sons, Dennis Boyle and his wife, Mary, of Leonardtown, Md., and Kevin Boyle and his wife, Debby, of Harrisonburg, Va.; two daughters, Carole Notari and her husband, Robert, of Queensbury, and Diane Funsten and her husband, Anthony, of King of Prussia, Pa., with whom he resided; one brother, Frank Boyle and his wife, Joan, of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Helen Guarente of Pittsburgh and Mary Lewis of Virginia Beach, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a stepmother, Catherine O'Donnell Boyle; and two brothers, Robert and Edward Boyle. Cohen, Hattie PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. -- Hattie Cohen of Pembroke Pines, Fla., formerly of Glens Falls, passed away peacefully in her sleep Monday morning, May 30, 2005. She would have been 101 years old on Sept. 12. Hattie, the daughter of Frances and Jacob Newmark, emigrated from Russia in 1904. Throughout her life, she was a constant inspiration to her family as well as to all who knew her. She was predeceased by her first husband, Louis Solomon; her second husband, Walter Cohen; two brothers, Max Newmark and Moses Newmark; and three sisters, Fannie and Esther Newmark and Minnie Zalkin; and her dearly beloved daughter, Gloria Bittman. She is survived by her daughter Sylvia Kudan (Norman); her son-in-law, Melvin Bittman; two granddaughters, Ronnie Shelley and Laurie Nelson (Jonathan); and two grandsons, Joe Bittman and Peter Kudan (Nancy). She is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Andrea Tomberg (Jeffrey), Meredith Peacock (Aaron), Brian Shelley, Ali Shelley, Jerry Kudan, and Alan Judan; and several nieces and nephews. Collins, 74, of Delaware Avenue, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2005, at his home, following a long illness. Born on July 12, 1930, in the town of Kingsbury, he was the son of the late Allen and Myrtle (Kane) Collins. He married Dawn Dashnaw on April 24, 1965, in St. Paul's Church in Hudson Falls. Dawn passed away on Oct. 28, 2002, after 37 years of marriage. As a very young man, Vernon worked as a farmer in this area. He later worked at Bronk Coal and Lumber Co. in the town of Fort Edward. In 1992, he retired from Pallets, Inc. of Fort Edward, where he worked 27 years. For a time, he was a Glens Falls resident and got great pleasure from his dog, Tiny, and his favorite television shows. In addition to his parents and his wife, two brothers, Donald Collins and Earl Collins, both passed away before him. Survivors include two brothers, Homer Collins and his wife, Lela, of Argyle, and Winfred Collins and his wife, Leona, of Hudson Falls; three sisters: Shirley Tucker of Argyle, Jean McGregor Kelleher and her husband, David, of Glens Falls, and Telesa Collins of Florida; a sister-in-law, Jane Collins; several nieces, nephews and cousins; his caregivers, Rick Stone of Canajoharie, Brenda Martin and Mary Bennett, both of Hudson Falls; and his special friend, Ellie Bennett of Hudson Falls. She was born Feb. 25, 1910, in Catskill, and was the daughter of the late Angelo and Rose (Battaglino) Compositor. Margaret retired from Gloversville Knitting in Schenectady, and at one time worked at General Electric Co., Building 2. She enjoyed crocheting, doing jigsaw puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Albert DiGirolamo, who passed away on July 3, 1995; her son, Ronald DiGirolamo; and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Jean Cooper, and her husband, Milton, of Queensbury; her five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 2, at Singleton-Healy Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury. Burial will follow at Pine View Cemetery. CORINTH -- Gertrude M. Heipt, 83, of Corinth, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2005, at Mountainview Manor Adult Home in Middleburgh, where she resided for the past two years. Born on April 11, 1922, in Corinth, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Minnie (Brown) Ovitt. Mrs. Heipt graduated from Corinth High School in 1939, and worked at the International Paper Co. in Corinth during World War II. She married Albert R. Heipt on Aug. 31, 1940, and the couple resided in Corinth for many years. He died Jan. 4, 1996, following 54 years of marriage. Survivors include one daughter, Gaye A. Rudolph of Fort Edward; two grandchildren, Michelle Boreali and her husband, Arthur, of Howes Cave, and Christopher Rudolph of Porter Corners; two sisters, Beverly Towers and her husband, Junior, of Corinth, and Shirley Welch of Glens Falls; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 3, at Densmore Funeral Home, Inc., 7 Sherman Ave., Corinth, with the Rev. Ingalls, age 66, of 1625 Route 9, died Sunday afternoon, May 29, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital after an extended illness. Born Nov. 11, 1938, in Crown Point, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Henry and Minnie Venner Wilber. Marion was a 1957 graduate of Schroon Lake Central School. She was employed at the Town Store and at Willifords News Room in Schroon Lake for many years. Marion enjoyed picking apples, gardening, making maple syrup and fishing and hunting. Marion loved her dogs, especially Shadow. Marion was predeceased by her husband, John H. Ingalls and her brother, John Wilber. She is survived by her two daughters, Faith and her husband, David Glowinski, of Glens Falls and Laurie Ingalls of Greenwich; her brother, George Lesson of Schroon Lake; her sisters, Kathleen Hevern of Irvington, N.Y., and Mary Pelkey of Schroon Lake; her grandchildren, Garret Wilcox, Katie and Lauren Camarda, and Brandon Brown; her great-grandchildren, Austin and Amelia Wilcox and Symantha Madison Camarda; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Edward L. Kelly Funeral Home, 1019 Route 9, Schroon Lake. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Miles, Norman M. HUDSON FALLS -- Norman M. Miles, 81, of Myrtle Avenue, passed away, Saturday, May 28, 2005, at the Indian River Rehabilitation Center in Granville, after a long illness. Born on Feb. 10, 1924, in Chateaugay, he was the son of the late Maurice and Estella (Bruso) Miles. Mr. Miles was a graduate of Fort Edward High School, and during his military service he attended Texas A&M University, where he received his certification in Radio Operations. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific and obtained the rank of staff sergeant. He received bombardier and navigator training at Turner Field in Quantico, Va. While overseas, he served with the Third Air Wing of the Third Marine Corps Headquarters Communications as well as MAG 23rd headquarters. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with one star, a Navy Unit Citation, the Navy Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. On Aug. 3, 1947, he married Pauline A. Lettus at St. Mary's Church in Hudson Falls. Mr. Miles served with the New York State Department of Corrections, retiring in 1980, as deputy superintendent of security at Great Meadow Correctional Facility. During his career, he was instrumental in the formation of the Command Emergency Response Teams, or CERTS. During the Attica uprising he assisted CERT Team operations there and was involved in the retaking of the facility. He was highly respected by staff and prisoners because he had the reputation of treating everyone fairly. For many years, he was Commissioner Quick's right-hand man, going to many of the prisons to help solve problems. Mr. Miles loved his grandkids, ice fishing, gardening, working on cars and building things. He was Past Grand Master of the Fort Edward Masonic Lodge No. 267. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, John Miles and Harold "Pudgy" Miles; his sister, May Otis and his daughter-in-law, Cheryl Miles. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Pauline Miles of Hudson Falls; three children: Judith Rheaume of Queensbury, John A. Miles of Queensbury and Steven N. Miles and his fiancee, Diane Petta of Queensbury; four grandchildren: Darren Miles, Megan Miles, Quinn Rheaume and Christopher Miles; one great-granddaughter, Madison Miles; one brother, Howard Miles of Keeseville; several nieces, nephews and cousins; a sister-in-law, Ruth Miles of Fort Edward; and two brothers-in-law, James Lettus of Queensbury and Paul LeValley of South Glens Falls. O'Connor, Harold F. GLENS FALLS -- Harold F. O'Connor, 82, of Glens Falls, passed away early Monday morning, May 30, 2005, after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family. Born April 22, 1923, he was the youngest son of the late Peter O'Connor and Mary (McGloin) O'Connor, Irish immigrants. He grew up in Flatbush, a neighborhood of Brooklyn. He attended Erasmus High School in Brooklyn. He spent his summers in Tottenville on Staten Island with his extended family, including his niece, Dolores (Blackwood) O'Neill, and nephew, Francis "Juney" Blackwood, who were also his close friends. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he fought in World War II, primarily in the Pacific Theatre, on the USS Hudson, the USS Houston and the USS Broome, and received the Bronze Star. He served for seven years and retired at the rank of Coxswain. He married his wife, Edith, his "Hon," on Feb. 15, 1964. They lived in Flatbush, the neighborhood they grew up in. Harold worked for the New York City Department of Marine and Aviation, working on the New York City Tugboat and the Staten Island Ferry, among others. He never missed a day of work. Over the summers, the O'Connors took their children up to "The Camp," on Lake Sunnyside in Queensbury. Harold retired in 1987, and he and his wife relocated to Glens Falls, and eventually their children followed them. He loved animals, owning many dogs and cats over the years. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the New York Mets, the New York Giants, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the United States Naval Academy Football team. But, more than anything, Harold loved to attend the games, recitals and concerts of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed old Western movies, war movies and action/adventure movies. He also loved big band and jazz music, especially Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. His and Edith's wedding song was Cole's "Unforgettable," and his motto mirrored that of Sinatra's "My Way." Along with his late mother and father, Harold was predeceased by his brothers, Vincent and Francis O'Connor; his sister, Helen (O'Connor) Blackwood; and his special nieces, Dolores (Blackwood) O'Neill and Margaret "Peggy" O'Neill. He is survived by his wife, Edith (O'Keefe) O'Connor; their five children: Katharine Brand and her husband, John, of Glens Falls, Thomas George of Glens Falls, William George and his wife, Elizabeth, of Queensbury, John George and his wife, Phyllis, of Queensbury, and Kim George of Glens Falls; their six grandchildren: Sean Brand and his wife, Diane, of Glens Falls, Brian George and his wife, Shireen, of Glens Falls, Corey Brand of Glens Falls, Kevin George of Queensbury, Jennifer O'Connor of Troy, and Melissa George of Queensbury. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews, including Francis "Juney" Blackwood of Staten Island. Paul, Florence Perrelli (Baker) QUEENSBURY -- Florence (Baker) Perrelli Paul, 97, a resident of Queensbury, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2005, at the Stanton Nursing Centre, Queensbury. She was born on Aug. 28, 1908, in New York City, and was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Lynch) Baker. At one time, Mrs. Paul lived in Corona, N.Y., and Lodi, N.J., until she moved to Queensbury to reside at John Burke Apartments. Mrs. Paul was a homemaker and attended Our Lady of the Annunciation Church. She was predeceased by her first husband, Vito Perrelli, and her second husband, Phil Paul. She was also predeceased by a son, William J. Perrelli. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Ursula (Deich) Perrelli of Queensbury; three grandchildren, Darron E. Maille, Michael W. Perrelli, and Anthony J. Perrelli, all of Queensbury; and several great-grandchildren: Brittany Rabine, Collin Duval, Erich Perrelli, Micaela Perrelli, Darrich Maille, and William Perrelli. Simmons, Elmer CLIFTON PARK -- Elmer Simmons, 73, of Clifton Park, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, May 28, 2005, at his home. Born on Nov. 14, 1931, in Clifton Park, he was the son of the late Frank Simmons Sr. He was a graduate of Burnt Hills Ballston Lake High School. Mr. Simmons lived in Clifton Park all of his life. He worked for General Electric Co. in Schenectady in Quality Control for 36 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Clifton Park United Methodist church all his life. We have been blessed to have had such a kind, thoughtful and gentle person who touched so many lives and will be missed dearly. His love and caring for animals was exemplified in his sanctuary on his hobby farm and was enjoyed by all who passed by it. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert J. Simmons Sr. and Frank Simmons Jr., and a nephew, Frank B. Simmons. Survivors include his mother, Inez Simmons of Clifton Park, his sisters and brother, Ruth (Roman) Johnson of Mechanicville, Charlotte (Robert) Butler of Ballston Lake, Marjorie (Roger) Travis of Clifton Park, Owen (Darlene) Simmons of Ballston Spa, and June (George) Lajeunesse of Clifton Park; a sister-in-law, Minnie Simmons of Schaghticoke.
