Flynn, Hilda Starbuck GLENS FALLS - Hilda Starbuck Flynn, 86, died on Oct. 14, 2005, in Ballston Spa. At her passing, she was comforted by the presence of several of her children. Mrs. Flynn was born on April 14,1919, to George Starbuck and Carrie Eldridge Starbuck. The Starbuck family included Hilda's older brother, James, and her sisters, Sallie and Eleanor. They lived in various communities within the Adirondacks. Hilda graduated from Whitehall High School with the Class of 1937. On April 24,1939, Hilda married Gerard (Rod) Flynn in Whitehall. Rod and Hilda resided in the northern Capital District and Troy as they raised their seven children. Her children, remembering Hilda and Rod as loving, strict and hardworking, have often expressed their gratitude for the good habits and ethics modeled and instilled in them by their parents. A close family, the Flynns' leisure activities included family meals at Aunt Sue's restaurant in Hudson Falls, the El-Ro-Do Stone Bar and Restaurant and long drives in the country. Hilda's efforts to drive a car remain especially memorable and were significant inspirations for the older children to secure their own licenses and share the driving with their father. Hilda worked inside and outside her home throughout her life. She retired from Garden Way of Troy in 1988. She was the house manager; the family seamstress; the quiet in the turmoil of a large family. She loved family gatherings. As a cook, her fare was unsurpassed. As a mother, she loved her children's spouses but quietly wondered whether longer searches might have produced better results for her near-faultless children. After Rod's death in 1990, Hilda moved to the Cronin High Rise in Glens Falls. For the past two years, she had resided at The Cedars in Queensbury. Her children's concerns about her loneliness without Rod were greatly eased by her obvious happiness and satisfaction with the real friendships she found in her final homes, especially at The Cedars. At her death, Hilda had also been predeceased by her parents, her brother, his wife, Mary, her sisters, their wonderful husbands, George Brooks and Will Rivette, her son, Gerard Jr., a true nonpareil, and her oldest grandson, Keith Pickett. Beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews, Rivette and Starbuck, Flynn and Simpson, Hilda is survived by her children, Patricia (Gary) Pickett of Salem, Michael (Jean) formerly of Schaghticoke, now Ocala, Fla., Mary Flynn of Syracuse, Elizabeth Flynn of Gloversville, Carolyn (Courtenay) Hall of Stillwater and George (Lynn) Flynn of Bolton Landing; a truly cherished daughter-in-law, Gloria Flynn of West Sand Lake; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls. A funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Church, Warren Street, Glens Falls. The family wishes to thank the residents of The Cedars for their friendship and care for Hilda. Lynn Flynn, Hilda's daughter-in-law, was an enduring joy and comfort to Hilda. Hospice of Saratoga County was, as always, useful and considerate. The management and staff of Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa was sensitive, compassionate and respectful to Hilda during her final month. For Maplewood's fine, wonderful attention and the ease and dignity of those final weeks, the family is especially grateful. Memorial contributions to honor Hilda and her life may be made to the residents activity funds of The Cedars, 35 Evergreen Lane, Queensbury, NY 12804 or Maplewood Manor 149 Ballston Ave., Ballston Spa, NY 12020.
