"Les" INDIAN LAKE -- Lelsie "Les" M. Ackerman, 62, a 12-year Indian Lake resident and former longtime Hyde Park, N.Y., resident, passed away at his home on Adirondack Lake Road, on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, surrounded by his adoring family. Born on Aug. 27, 1943, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Les was the only son of Emma Momrow Ackerman and the late Fred V. Ackerman, who died in 1965. His mother survives him in Rhinebeck, N.Y. On Jan. 16, 1965, Les married the former Diane I. Zeus. The couple were wed at the Reformed Church in Poughkeepsie by the Rev. Franklin Hinkamp. His beloved wife of 40 years survives at home. Les graduated from F.D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park and attended Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie. Following his education, he worked as a civil engineer for the New York State Department of Transportation in Poughkeepsie for 33 years. He retired from the state in 2000. After his retirement, Les worked for the Hamilton County Housing Assistance Program until July 2005. He was a member of the New York State Association of Transportation Engineers. Les was a very proud and dedicated member of the Hyde Park United Methodist Church and the Indian Lake United Methodist Church. He was active with the United Methodist Men's Club and could often be seen cooking and dishing out food at many church functions. In addition, Les was also an active member of the Tres Dias community. Les was also involved in political circles. He served on the Hyde Park Zoning Board of Appeals and the Hyde Park Planning Board, where he also served as a chairman. While in Indian Lake, he also served on the Planning Board and was currently serving his term as town councilman for the town of Indian Lake. Hunting and fishing with his close friends and family were some of his favorite pastimes. He spent many seasons hunting on Stissing Mountain in Pine Plains, N.Y., and fishing in Canada. As soon as the snow fell, you could find Les skiing and snowmobiling. In addition to his wife and mother, Les is also survived by a daughter, Denise Ann Ackerman of Poughkeepsie; his son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Allison Ackerman of Hyde Park; his father-in-law, Louis Zeus of Rhinebeck; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Helene and Robert Carpenter of North Carolina; a niece, Carrie Trainor of Poughkeepsie; a nephew, Keith Carpenter of Poughkeepsie; two great-nephews; an aunt, many cousins and friends and his faithful pet, Lexi. A memorial service will be held at the Indian Lake United Methodist Church on Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at 1 p.m. Donations may be made in Les' honor to the Indian Lake United Methodist Church, P.O. Donald Howe died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, peacefully with his wife, daughter and close friend by his side, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center. He was born on Sept. 6, 1923, in Fortsville, N.Y., the son of Elmer P. and Mary (VanDusen) Howe. He was a graduate of South Glens Falls High School Class of 1941. Upon graduation, he went to work for the Grand Union Company before joining the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the European Theatre. Following his discharge, he became manager of the Proctor Grand Union. He also worked for Wilson Sports in Rutland, the Proctor Creamery and was custodian of the Proctor Elementary School where he loved the children and enjoyed the adults whom he worked with. Upon retirement, he began reading two to three books weekly, something he'd never found the time to do before. Don married Helen Macek on May 28, 1949. They purchased their home in 1958 and he developed his own long-range remodeling plan and carried this out himself. Donald volunteered his time and energy for a wide variety of projects at the Union Church of Proctor. He was a member of Sutherland Falls Free and Accepted Masons Masonic Lodge 108 in Proctor and served as master for many years. He was a lifelong woodworker, hunter, fisherman and skier. He is survived by his wife, Helen, and their daughter, Donna, both of Proctor; two sisters, Anna Abare and Geraldine Stanton of South Glens Falls; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, David Howe. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service was held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30 at the Union Church of Proctor. Private committal services will be held at the family's convenience in South Street Cemetery in Proctor. Noakes, 90, of Glenbrook Drive in Clifton Park, died on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at the Saratoga Hospital after a long illness. He was born on Aug. 28, 1915, in Albany, N.Y., and was the son of the late Herman and Margaret McMahon Noakes. Mr. Noakes was a graduate of the former Milne High School in Albany. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Noakes retired on June 20, 1975, from the United States Postal Service in Albany where he had been a clerk, having worked there for more than 33 years. He and his late wife, Mary, had been summer residents of Brant Lake for many years. Mr. Noakes enjoyed downhill skiing and was also proud to be the oldest waterskier on Brant Lake. He was a communicant of St. Edward the Confessor Church in Clifton Park. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary C. Noakes, whom he married on April 26, 1947. The devoted father of Gary (Jane) Noakes of Clifton Park; cherished grandfather of Spencer D. (Guinevere) Noakes of Albany and Maria K. (Matthew) Noakes of Clifton Park; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held Friday morning at 10 a.m. from the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route 9 in Clifton Park. (Hopsing) (Butch) Chestertown -- Arthur E. (Butch) (Hopsing) Smith, 58, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at his home. Born Oct. 14, 1946, in Brant Lake, he was the son of the late Clifton B. and Kathryn (Weller) Smith. Butch was a retired currier for Warren County Department of Public Works and was formerly employed as a painter with Francisco Painting of Brant Lake. He served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army. Butch was a member of the Chestertown Conservation Club; he also enjoyed NASCAR, yard work and spending time with family and friends. Survivors include one brother, Michael Smith and his wife, Anita, of Gordon, Ala.; two sisters, Linda Stemler of Brant Lake and Becky Warrington of Malta; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. At Butch's request, his body is to be donated to the Albany Medical College Anatomical Gift Program. Memorial services will be announced at a later time. Welch, Leon "Link" HUDSON FALLS -- Leon "Link" Welch, 87, of Hudson Falls passed away on Aug. 31, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital, after a long battle with heart and lung disease. Link was born on April 5, 1918, in Hudson Falls, to the late Frederick and Lydia (Drew) Welch. He graduated from Hudson Falls High School in 1937, where he played basketball and was on a championship football team. Link was in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II, where he served his country with pride in Burma and China. He married Lucille LaCarte in Hudson Falls on Feb. 12, 1949. After World War II, he worked in the foundry at the Sandy Hill Iron and Brass in Hudson Falls. Thirty years later, he retired from that company. During his life, he lived in Hudson Falls on Allen Street and later Preston Street. At the time of his death, he lived on the Adamsville Flats, with his daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Bob Clary. Link enjoyed fishing, bowling, camping at Hadlock Pond and feeding squirrels. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Lucille. Link stated, "if someone should ask when did Link die, tell them Saturday, March 31, 1990 - 3:00 a.m. - Glens Falls Hospital, when his beloved wife, Lucille passed away." He was also predeceased by his parents; five sisters, Alice Bentley, Connie Vaughn, Mary Norton, Olive Colvin and Doris Fish; and his brother, Melvin Welch. Link is survived by his two daughters, Sally Carota and her husband, Robert, of Mount Pleasant, S.C. and Sandra Clary and her husband, Robert, of Adamsville; 11 grandchildren, Diane Dickson and her husband, Mark, of South Carolina, Karen De jong and her husband, Frank, of South Carolina, Kathy Nagel and her husband, Ken, of South Carolina, Robert Carota of Fort Edward, John Carota of Castleton, Beth Carota of South Carolina, Christopher Clary of South Glens Falls, Lorrie Irish and her husband, Jim, of Hudson Falls, LeeAnn Beckwith and her husband, Mike, of Queensbury, Robin Clary of Hudson Falls, Sandra Jean Stanton and her husband, Gary, of Hudson Falls; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, including his very special nephew, Robert Joseph Platt and his wife, Kathy, of Adamsville. Friends may call on Saturday, Sept. 3, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St. in Hudson Falls. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Donald Shuler officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Cemetery in the town of Kingsbury with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post No. 574.
