Born in Hinsdale, Mass., she was the youngest of 10 children born to Henry and Alfretta (Hiser) Smith. Marjorie was educated in local school in Hinsdale and Dalton. She went on to work for the New England Telephone Company, as a supervisor, to help support her parents. In 1950, she married Edward W. Moving from Hinsdale to Washington and eventually in 1967 to Cambridge, Marjorie took an active roll in many social groups, NYS Extension Services, Salem Women's Club, Farm and Garden and was an early member of The Century Club. She was also active in several churches in Cambridge. Marjorie loved gardening and nature and spent most of her days doing kind things for others. She gave unselfishly of her time and heart. With Philip she had the happiest years of her life, getting a chance to travel and spending winters on the Florida coast. She so enjoyed watching the dolphins swimming along the beaches. In 1995, it was clear that she was suffering from congestive heart failure and Philip had developed advanced Alzheimer's disease. Marjorie spent several months in St. Peters Hospital in Albany and Philip had been placed in the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center. Marjorie recovered at her home in Cambridge, being cared for by her son, David, and dear friends, Margaret Steen and Russell Bagley. When she could no longer be cared for at home, she entered Hoosick Falls Health Center. Marjorie was preceded in death by her entire family with the exception of her beloved son, David. Marjorie received excellent care from all the staff at the Hoosick Falls Health Center. She was truly grateful to all her doctors, nurses and CNAs for all the attention she received.
