She was the daughter of Alexander Gilchrist and Catherine McNeil. Soon after Eleanor was born, her family moved to Argyle in Washington County where Alexander recieved a grant of land in the Argyle Patent. Eleanor married James Gillis about 1786 in Argyle, probably at the Presbeterian Church, to which they both belonged. Eleanor & James had eight children. Eleanor died on February 7, 1829 in Argyle, and she is buried in the Scotch Cemetery there.
