Roll dated Oct 8, 1814. Commencement of Service Sept 8, 1814; expiration of service Oct 8, 1814. Pay per month 8 dollars. Amount of pay 8 dollars. (File includes several over rolls for other dates - all similar to preceding.) State of Arkansas, County of Sebastian. On this 28th day of August A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty five personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace..... aforesaid ALEXANDER McLEAN aged fifty nine years, a resident of Crawford County Arkansas who being duly sworn... declares that he is the identical same ALEXANDER McLEAN who was a private of the uniform company of Albany Volunteers. Captains name JOHN R. WILLIAMS but commanded when in service by Lieut. JUDSON or HUDSON whose christian name is not now recollected, nor does he recollect the number of the Regiment.... That he volunteered according to the best of his recollection for the term of three months and continued in the service...for about that time. That he with his company was stationed at the Brookland heights near New York City ... that he and his Company was sent home to Albany on a Steam Boat and landed informely some time in December A.D. 1814, all of which will as he believes more fully appear by the muster rolls of said Company. He makes this Declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the act of..... Also that he has not receive a warrant for Bounty land under any act of Congress and that he has not made any other application...... /s/ A. Adjustant Genl., United States, Sir - I have been advised by friends to write to you for information which I have endeavored in vain, to obtain elsewhere therefore I trust you will pard the liberty I take of addressing a letter to you on the subject. I am the widow of ALEXANDER McLEAN, a soldier of the War of 1812. Sometime between the years 1853 and 1858, my husband received a Land Warrant for 160 acres, for 60 days service in the War of 1812, through the intervention of Mr. HENRY WILCOX, Attorney at Law Van Buren Ark of which place, my husband had been a resident many years previous to our marriage in 1842, and continued to reside there up to the date of his death Oct 8th 1859. The Land Warrant could not be found after his decease, and must have been lost or stolen so I have not been able to discover the least trace of it. There was a bar? of marriage? later than 1815. existing against me previous to act of March 9th, this bar is removed and being in necessitous circumstances and aged nearly 60, I wish to make application for pension. I have been told that you can furnish the Military history of the Soldiers of 1812, the place of their enlistment and with what State troops they enlisted.....ALEXANDER McLEAN - my husband was born Dec 1794, in Argyle - Washington County New York and probably was acting as clerk in a store at Salem Washington Co New York at the time he volunteered or enlisted.... State of Arkansas, County of Hot Spring} ss On this 25th day of April A.D. one thousand eight hundred and seventy nine personally appeared.... FRANCES A. McLEAN aged 58 years, a resident of Hot Spring county, in the State of Arkansas, who... declares that she is the widow of ALEXANDER McLEAN deceased... following is a full description of her said husband. He was in his forty eighth year when she first saw him in 1842. his occupation was that of Clerk from early youth up to the time of his decease. He was born 25th of December 1794 in Argyle, Washington County, State of New York. He was five feet nine and a half, or ten inchs in height. his hair dark brown, eyes dark hazel, complexion dark clear, slightly florid - regular features his person quite slender in early manhood, she further states that she was married to the said ALEXANDER McLEAN at the town of Van Buren, in the County of Crawford, and in the State of Arkansas, on the 19th day of December A.D., 1842, by one Revd. Abe? or Mr.? McLEAN of Clarksville, Johnson County Arkansas who was a Presbyterian Clergyman of the old school, that her name before marriage was FRANCES A. McCRACKEN, and that she has not remarried since the death of said soldier, and she further states that her husband had been previously married to Miss MARY G.? INGRAM in 1829, who died the 1st day of October 1829, some twenty miles or more from Van Buren, leaving a son who died 9th of October 1829. and that her said husband ALEXANDER McLEAN died near Van Buren in the State of Arkansas on the 8th day of October A.D. 1859 and she further declares that he, when quite a youth acted as clerk in store, belonging she believes - to a Mr. JOHN KENNADY at Salem - Washington County, N.Y. remained there three years, then as first clerk in the Post Office at Albany N.Y. the post master died and he went to the city of New York found employment as a clerk in the Custom house, his health failing he left New York in 1820, and went to Cuba, from there to New Orleans where he acted as clerk in a Bank and also in the Custom House, he lived in that place three or four years, his health again failing, he came to Arkansas, taking charge of a trading house belonging to a Mr. GLENN, among the Indians, and not very far from the Dwight Mission House., after leaving the trading house, he acted as clerk for Mr. Rogers a merchant of Fort Smith Arkansas, finally settling in Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas where, for nearly a quarter of a century he was clerk of the United States Court for the Western District of Arkansas, and that from the date of her marriages to said ALEXANDER McLEAN, she and her husband resided in Van Buren or vicinity, up to the time of his death....further declares that heretofore she has made no application for pension.....and that her residence is near Watermelon Island County of Hot Spring, State of Arkansas, and that her Post office address is Donaldson - Hot Spring county Arkansas...../s/ FRANCES A. McLEAN. Attest: DANIEL? MORRISON, MARY E. WARING. Department of the Interior. Washington, D.C. May 26, 1879. Sir: You are informed that the claim No. 26.187 of FRANCES A. McCLEAN as widow of ALEXANDER McCLEAN for a pension under Act of Mch 9.78, is rejected, on the ground that there is no record evidence on file, showing that the soldier served in the War of 1812. WARING, aged 61 years, residing at Hot Spring County Arkansas, and BELLE MORRISON, aged 35 years, residing at Hot Spring County Arkansas, persons whom I certify to be respectable...say that they have known the said FRANCIS A. McLEAN for 50 years and for 30 years, respectively;....following named facts and circumstances, viz: The said MARY E. WARRING from fact that she is Mrs. McLANE's sister, - lived near Mr. & Mrs. McLANE where they lived together as man and wife. The said BELLE MORRISON because she is a daughter of the said FRANCES A.
