James Hill. The death of Mr. Hill, was extremely sudden, occurring at his late residence in Easton, on May 7, 1893, of pneumonia. He was a son of James M. Hill and his wife Electa Hoyt, and was born July 4, 1830. The funeral service was held at the Whiteside church in Cambridge, and the burial in the Evergreen cemetery at Salem. He is survived by his wife, and son Alfred, who is noted for his distinguished ability as a scholar, and an only daughter, Ida, who married Edward, a son of Horace J. Townsend of Salem. Mr. Hill was elected sheriff of Washington county, in November, 1879, and served three years from January first ensuing, with great faithfulness and success, distinguished energy and efficiency characterizing his performance of the duties of the office. He has always exercised a large influence in the political affairs of the county, and was known as a man who never forgot a friend or a favor, and never failed in the performance of his promise.
