To all to whom these presents shall come and may concern send greeting Know ye that at Easton in the County of Washington on the twenty fourth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nineteen before Cochrim Smith Esquire Surrogate of our said county the last will and testament of Peter Viele deceased a copy where of is here unto annexed was proved and is now approved and allowed of by us and the said deceased having whilst he lived and at the time of his death goods chattels or credits ⌂ in this State by means whence whereof the proving and registering the said will and the granting administration of all and singular the said goods Chattels and credits and also the auditing allowing and final discharging the account there of doth belong unto us. The administration of all and singular the good and chattels and credits of the said deceased and any way concerning his will is granted unto Elizabeth Viele Executrix and Jacob Shuttles, John Van Woert and Jacob L Viele Van Woert Executors in the said will named they being first duly sworn well and fully to administer the same and to make and exhibit a true and perfect inventory of all and singular the said goods chattels and credits and also to render a just and true account thereof when thereunto required. In the Name of God amen I Peter Viele of the town of Cambridge in the County of Washington am weak in body but of sound disposing mind and memory and understanding Blessed be Almighty God therefore considering the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say First I commend my Soul to Almighty God who gave it me in the hope of full pardon and remission of all my sins through the merits and mediation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. My body I commit to the Earth from whence it came to buried in a decent Christian like manner and of the Worldly state herewith it has pleased the Almighty to bless me after paying my just debts and funeral charges I dispose in following manner Second I give and devise bequeath unto my beloved wife Elizabeth all my Estate real and personal for her use and benefit during her natural life or as long as she remains my widow excepting my household furniture the Negro slaves or servants I die posessed of my horses cows waggons and all other utensils which came to be hers absolutely to dispose of as she pleases together with all the income of my real and personal Estate. Third I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Catherine wife of Cornelius Fonda the one equal undivided fourth part of my Estate Real and personal which may remain after the decease of my wife to hold the same to her the said Catherine her heirs and assigns forever. Forth I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Mariah the wife of Jacob Shuttles the one Equal undivided fourth part of all my estate real and personal which may remain after the decease of my wife to hold the same to her the said Mariah her heirs and assigns forever. Fifth I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Hendrike the wife of John Buskirk the one Equal undivided fourth part of all my estate real and personal which may remain after the decease of my wife to hold the same to her the said Hendrike her heirs and assigns forever. Sixth I give devise and bequeath unto my son in law Jacob Shuttliss and my friend John Van Woert and to the survivor of them the one Equal undivided fourth part of all my estate real and personal not herein devised with full power and authority to make decision and partition thereof In trust nevertheless and for the use and benefit of my daughter Alida wife of William Groesbeck and her heirs to be disposed of by the said Jacob and John or the survivor of them in manner following to wit - For the support and maintenance of my said daughter Alida and her children for and during the Natural life of the said William Groesbeck should the said trustees or the survivor of them deem such support necessary and in case my said daughter Alida should not survive the said William then for the support and maintenance of her children until they respectively arrive to the age of twenty one years should the said trustees deem the same necessary and for the purposes aforesaid I do hereby empower the said trustees or the survivor of them to sell dispose of and convey in fee simple the said fourth part of my estate _____ _______ to them or any part thereof and in case my said daughter Alida should survive the said William Groesbeck then it is my will that the said trustees or the survivor of them shall convey such part of the estate in _____ dereise containing as shall at the time of the death of the said William be undisposed of for the purposes of ones and to the said Alida her heirs and assigns absolutely and unconditionally And I do further order and direct them on the death of the said Alida (the said William her surviving) the said trustees or survivor of them shall annually divide among her children the income or profits from the estate here in bequeathed or such part thereof as shall then remain undisposed of or unapplied arising arising until the youngest shall arrive to the age of twenty one years at which time I direct that such trustees or the survivor of them shall convey to the children of my said daughter and their heirs the estate in this devise containing or such part there of as shall there be remaining undisposed of and unapplied and their heirs and assigns forever in Equal proportions. Lastly I nominate constitute and appoint my wife Elizabeth my son in Law Jacob Shuttles and my friend John Van Woert of Nettletown County of Rensselaer as Executors and Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament hereby revoking and annulling all former wills and testaments heretofore made In witness whereof I hereby hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Eighteen. I further nominate and appoint Jacob L Van Woert an additional Executor with same powers as the others. his Signed Sealed established Peter X Viele And declared by the above Mark Named Peter Viele as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence and at his requestance and in the presence of each other have signed our names as witnesses (the word Washington in the second line from the top in _______ before execution). Winant Vandenbergh Jacob Vandenbergh Peter Vandenbergh Additional Comments: Some of this was very hard to make out. Jacob Shuttles last name could be Shutlis or Shuttliss. My main interest was in the Groesbecks and it was interesting to see that Peter obviously didn't trust William with money! An 1833 Salem NY deed between William's son Hugh and Jacob Shuttles refers to this will.
