Kress, son of Andrew P.T. Kress and Rhoda Ann (Bunce) Kress, but it was lost after he died in 1924 at Corning, Steuben Co., New York.) PETER BUNCE, SR., b. 12 July 1772 (believe in Egremont, Mass.), d. 3 Jan 1844, Barrington, Yates Co., New York. He married RHODA LOOMIS, dau. of Andrew and Elizabeth (Coates) Loomis, Oct. 1800. Rhoda was b. 24 March 1782 in Massachusetts, d. 27 Oct. 1852, apparently in Starkey, N.Y. She is listed in the 1850 census as being 68 years old and residing with her daughter and son-in-law, Rhoda and Tillman Kress of Starkey. Rhoda and Peter Bunce, Sr. were both buried in the Old Methodist-Episcopal Cemetery in Yates Co., New York. Peter Bunce, Sr., with his wife and 10 of his children, moved from a farm near South Egremont, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts to Barrington, Yates Co., N.Y. settling on a farm in the vicinity of Starkey's Corners, Yates Co., N.Y. in 1823. They traveled in a two-horse farm wagon without springs. The older children walked, a distance of about three hundred miles. Ten of their children were born in Egremont, Massachusetts. The eleventh and last child was born in Barrington, New York. Names and birthdates of their children follow: 1. Orpha Bunce, b. 19 Mar 1802, m. in Mar, 1827, Samuel Maring (son of George Maring and Mary Hager Wilhelm), d. 6 Feb 1842 at Conesus, Livingston Co., New York. Samuel Maring d. 23 Nov 1889, at Conesus. They had 6 children: George, William, Andrew Wesley, Samuel Jr., Mary Jane and Brainard B. Maring, born between 1828-1841. 2. Loomis Bunce, b. 18 May 1804, d. 5 Mar 1878 in Dundee, NY. Married (1) Mary Holmes, b. 1819, dau. of Wm. Holmes of Steuben Co., NY 3 Feb 1837; had two children, Eliza Ann and Melvin N. Mary (Holmes) Bunce d. 29 Jun 1867 and is buried with her husband Loomis and his parents, Peter and Rhoda (Loomis) Bunce, in the Old Methodist-Episcopal Cemetery in Yates Co., NY. Loomis m. (2) Eunice (Cleveland) Olney, widow of Rev. David B. Olney, a Baptist clergyman. She was born in Naples, NY about 1812, dau. of E. W. and Hannah (Watkins) Cleveland. She d. 13 Aug 1880 in Dundee. No children by second marriage. 3. Nancy Bunce, b. 23 Jun 1806, m. Martin Adsit 13 Nov 1828 in Hornby, Steuben Co., New York, d. 28 Oct 1868 in Hornby, N.Y. Had two known daughters (source 1850 Hornby, Steuben Co., NY census) Sophia, b.ca. 1836 and Anna, b.ca. 1846, possibly others. 4. Betsey Bunce, b. 27 Nov 1808, m. Chauncey Boyce (1805-1850) of Starkey on 10 Feb 1828, d. 15 May 1879 in Tyrone, Schuyler Co., NY. Had five children: Maria A., John, Edmund, Melissa and Margenia Boyce, born between 1829-1847. Married (2) Jonathan Taylor 2 Sep 1852 (source: a book on genealogical abstracts from Yates Co., NY newspapers). 5. Thankful Bunce, b. 10 July 1810, m. in Dec 1833, Lewis Bennett (b. 2 Mar 1812, one of 12 children of Ephraim and Jemima (Webster) Bennett, d. 12 Sep 1897 at S. Bradford) d. 3 July 1880 in South Bradford, Steuben Co., N.Y. Not certain of the number of their children, possibly six. One was dau. Alida, who m. Charles Walling about 1881 in Steuben Co., NY; also a dau. who apparently d. young, Rosetta, b. 5 Feb 1849 at Bath, NY, but her name did not appear on the 1855 census; they were said to have also had 3 or 4 sons, names unknown. Albert Bennett of Painted Post, Steuben Co., NY, was named as an heir of Samuel F. Kress in 1924, but Samuel Kress also had a Bennett family on his father's side of the family, so it is not known for certain whether this Albert was one of the children of Lewis and Thankful (Bunce) Bennett. 6. Josiah Bunce, b. 13 Jun 1812, m. Hilda Taylor (dau. of Jonathan Taylor), in Mar 1844, d. 18 Sep 1884 in Barrington, NY, buried with his parents in the Old Methodist Episcopal Church cemetery in Yates Co., NY. No children. 7. Calvin Bunce, b. 12 May 1815, m. Mary (last name unknown), Dec 1842, d. ________. No further record. 8. William J. Bunce, b. 25 Jun 1817, unmarried, d. 22 Jan 1839; buried with his parents in the Old Methodist Episcopal Church cemetery in Yates Co., NY. 9. Sophia Bunce, b. 16 Jun 1819, m. Luman A. Jones 29 Apr 1841, d. 19 Apr 1891 at Himrod, Yates Co., NY. Luman Jones died 11 Oct 1884. Had five children: George J., Rhoda, Edwin, Celia and Delia. 10. Rhoda Ann Bunce, b. 26 Aug. 1821, m. Andrew P. Tillman Kress (son of Samuel Jr. and Betsey (Starkey) Kress), 3 Jan 1849 (as his second wife), d. 6 May 1898 in Corning, Steuben Co., NY. One son Samuel F. "Sammy" Kress and one daughter, Sarah, who m. Alvin Coye. 11. Peter Bunce, Jr., b. 18 Oct 1823 in Barrington, Yates Co., New York, d. 3 Jan 1892, m. Mary Bolender Kress, dau. of John Jay Kress and Margaret (Murdock) Kress of Starkey, NY, 18 Mar 1846, by Rev. Nathan Fellows. Mary was b. 22 Sep 1822 in Starkey, Yates Co., NY, d. 22 Apr 1901. Both Peter and Mary died in the Bunce farm home, near Tescumseh, Shawnee Co., Kansas, and were buried in Bethel Cemetery. Had six children: Spencer, John Jay, Alida Lorissa, Charles (who d. in infancy), George Kress and Wesley Melvin, born between 1849-1864.
