Cleveland's History and Directory of Yates County, New York, p. 159. Maria was b. 1829 based on her age on her gravestone in the Tyrone Cemetery, Tyrone, New York, which record says she d. 8 Jan 1893 at age 64. She had probably married Fletcher Heald prior to 1850 since she was not living with her parents when the federal census was taken. The 1855 New York state census says this about her family: Town of Barrington Yates County, New York New York state Census taken June 8, 1855 by John Boyce, Marshal 56th family: Fletcher Heald, male, age 33, farmer, birthplace: Essex Co., New York had lived in Yates County for 7 years. [Betsey (Bunce) Boyce married Jonathan Taylor on 2 Sep 1852 in Barrington, Yates Co., New York, I do not know where Jonathan Taylor was living at time of this census, it's possible that they had separated, since Jonathan Taylor seems to have died after 1855.] Lucretia Boyce, age 32, female, born in Yates County, had lived in Yates County for 32 years, daughter-in-law [Lucretia Baskin was the wife of John Boyce, and is buried next to him in a cemetery in Dundee, New York. Gravestone gives her birthdate as 27 Jun 1821 and date of death as 3 Jan 1904. Cleveland's History and Directory of Yates County, New York.] John Boyce, male, age 25, farmer, born in Yates County, lived in Yates County 25 years, owned his own land, lived in frame house worth $600 [John Boyce was said to have gone to Iowa in S.C. Cleveland's History and Directory of Yates Co., NY on p. 159, but he and his wife apparently returned to Yates Co. after the book was published since they are buried near his brother Edmund and his wife in a cemetery in Dundee, New York. The date of his birth on his gravestone reads 2 Aug 1829 and his date of death reads 27 Jul 1889.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- Town of Starkey Yates County, New York New York state Census taken June 8, 1855 by John Boyce, Marshal 62nd Family enumerated in census: Luman A. (Kress) Bunce had lived 5 years in Wisconsin; returned to Yates County in late 1854, moved to Tescumseh, Shawnee Co., Kansas in the spring of 1857. Peter Bunce was the last and 11th child of Peter Bunce, Sr. and his wife Rhoda Loomis, per family Bible record. Gravestone record in Bethel Cemetery, Shawnee Co., Kansas gives his birthdate as 18 Oct 1823, and he died 3 Jan 1892. He worked as a carpenter, taught grade school and did some farming.] Balinda Bunce, age 31, female, born in Yates County, lived there 26 years ["Balinda" appears to be a mistake or nickname, as her name was Mary Bolender (Kress) Bunce, daughter of John Jay and Margaret (Murdock) Kress of Starkey, Yates Co., New York. She and Peter Bunce, Jr. was married in a Methodist Episcopal Church at Starkey Corners on 18 Mar 1846 by Rev. Nathan Fellows based on their original marriage certificate.] Spencer Bunce, age 5, male, child, born in Yates County, lived 5 years in Yates Co. [sic] [Spencer Bunce died at age 18 in Shawnee Co., Kansas. From family records and a gravestone record for him he was born 22 Jun 1849 at Beaver Falls, Pierce Co., Wisconsin, and died 31 Oct 1867 in Tescumseh, Shawnee Co., Kansas. He never married. It is said he used to deliver mail between Tescumseh and Topeka on horseback. Was buried in Bethel Cemetery.] John Bunce, age 4, male, child, born in Yates County [sic] [John's full name was John Jay Bunce, born 22 Feb 1851 in Fall River, Columbia Co., Wisconsin, based on family records. He served in the Indian Wars in the early days of Kansas and later collected a disability pension for his service. It's said he lied about his age to get into the army and his pension record reflects that lie, in that it has the birthdate of his brother Spencer, as his birthdate. His pension record contains the names and birthdates of his 7 children. He m. Ellen Hall Clark on 28 Jan 1874 in Shawnee Co., Kansas. He died at Topeka or Lecompton, Kansas on 4 Sep 1943.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- Town of Starkey Yates County, New York New York state census taken June 25, 1855 by John Boyce, Marshal 237th dwelling, 247th family enumerated in the census Loomis Bunce, age 51, male, born in Massachusetts, lived for 30 years in Yates County, lived in a frame dwelling worth $2,000 Mary Bunce, age 42, female, wife, born in Steuben County, had lived in Yates County for 17 years Eliza Bunce, age 17, female, child, born in Yates County Melvin Bunce, age 12, male, child, born in Yates County Benjamin Horr, age 16, male, adopted, born in Steuben County, lived in Yates County 9 years [Note: Benjamin Horr's name did not appear in the probate record for either Mary (Holmes) Bunce dated 1868, or Loomis Bunce dated March, 1880, so perhaps Loomis Bunce gave him an inheritance prior to his death, or Benjamin may have died young. Perhaps he was a relative of Mary (Holmes) Bunce since he had also come from Steuben Co., NY.]
