Witnesseth that the said Cornelius Washburn and Jemima his wife for and in consideration of the Sum of two hundred and fifty Dollars to them in hand paid the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge and forever acquit and discharge the said James Alexander his heirs executors and administrators hath granted bargained sold and confirmed and by these presents do grant bargain Sell and confirm to the said James Alexander his heirs and assigns forever all that tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Adams and State of Ohio on the waters of Shail?/Strait? Creek being part of a tract of land surveyed and entered for Samuel Hopkins to who a patent issued and by the said Samuel Hopkins assigned to Cornelius Washburn No. of entry 963 bounded as followeth (to wit) Beginning at three Poplars thence West eigty nine poles to a poplar thence South ninety one poles to two bushes thence East eighty nine poles to a beach and Elm thence North ninety one poles to the place of beginning containing fifty acres be the same more or less Togeather with all improvements and appurtenances whatsoever to the said premises belonging or in any wise appertaining and all the estate right title interest claim and demand of them the said Cornelius Washburn and Jemima his wife of in and to the same To have and to hold the land the land hereby conveyed with all the premises and every part and parcel thereof with every of the appurtenances unto the said James Alexander his heirs and assigns forever and the said Cornelius Washburn and Jemima his wife and their heirs all the premises hereby bargained and sold with the appurtenances unto the said James Alexander and his heirs and assigns against them the said Cornelius Washburn and Jemima his wife their heirs and all and every other person or persons whomsoever do and will warrant and forever defend by these presents. In Testimony whereof wee the said Cornelius Washburn and Jemima his wife have hereunto Set our hands and seals the day and year first in this indenture written. Cornelius (his X mark) Washburn (Seal) Jemima (her O mark) Washburn (Seal) Signed Sealed and delivered in the presence of William Lacock, Nicholas Washburn State of Ohio, Adams County ) I Certify that this day the within named Cornelius Washburn and Jemima his wife personally appeared before me the subscriber a Justice of the peace in & for the county aforesaid & severally acknowledged the within signing and Sealing to be their act and deed for the purposes therein mentioned. The said Jemima Washburn being first by me fully informed of the contents of the within deed & also examined separate and apart from her husband declared that she did voluntarily & of his [sic] own free will and accord Seal and as her act and deed deliver the within deed of conveyance & relinquish her right of dower to the premises within mentioned without the coercion or persuasion of her said husband. Additional Comments: FHL film #0545221 Note: The deed cannot have been written in November and recorded in April the same year, so I believe the clerk made an error in recording it. The deed just before this one was also for the same couple, Cornelius and Jemima Washburn, conveying land to Nicholas Washburn and dated 1 Nov 1814. It was also recorded 15 Apr 1815.
