Cokonougher, Grandson Of Joseph Wisecup. Name: Joseph Elwood Wisecup Date Of Photograph: Abt. 1900 Photo can be seen at: http://www.usgwarchives.net/oh/adams/photos/wisecup3012nph.jpg Image file size: 85.7 Kb This is three versions of the same photo of Joseph Wisecup. The smallest was about 1 inch by 1 1/2 inches in size, and the largest was about 2 1/2 feet by 3 feet. The original was paper on cardboard. These pictures were owned by my grandfather, John H. Cokonougher, who was the grandson of Joseph E. Wisecup. Additional Comments: Joseph Elwood Wisecup was born 20 March 1830 in Ohio to Jacob Jackson Wisecup and Nancy (Franklin) Wisecup. During his lifetime, he was a farmer and a sheriff in Adams County, Ohio. He may have also been a lawyer. Joseph was married, and widowed, four times. His first wife was Phoeba Frost, born about 1830, and died August 1859, of consumption. She and Joseph had four female children – Mary, Margaret, Providence, and Sydilla Wisecup. Providence and Sydilla died two years after their mother. Mary married Zackariah Cokonougher and moved to Ross County, Ohio. I am descended from Mary and Zackariah. Margaret married Willis Smalley, who was actively involved in local and state politics. Joseph’s second wife was Isabel Skidmore, born about 1837. She and Joseph had three children – Stephen, Joseph Jr., and Sarah “Salley” Wisecup. Joseph Jr. married Ruth Herdman and moved to Buckskin Township in Ross County, Ohio, near his sister Mary. “Salley” married Charles McMullen. It was at Salley’s home that Joseph Sr. passed away in 1906. Joseph’s first wife, Isabel, was reported to be a very mean step- mother to his first four children. She reportedly gave them beatings, and refused to let them eat when Joseph was away on business. After Isabel gave Margaret a severe and bloody beating with a switch cut from a thorny rose bush, Joseph took his first wife’s two surviving daughters, Mary and Margaret, away from their step-mother. He then placed them with their maternal grandmother, Proba Frost, with whom they lived until they reached adulthood. Joseph’s third wife was Martha King, and his fourth wife was Rebecca Jones. Joseph Wisecup died on 11 January 1906. His obituary says that he was “consciencious, warmhearted and true and ever maintained the confidence of all who knew him. In his neighborhood where he spent most of his life his table was set for all. At his home church during revivals or protracted meetings everybody was welcome to go to Bro. Wisecup’s. His pleasant and amiable disposition endeared him alike to young and old.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/oh/adams/photos/wisecup3012nph.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/ohfiles/ File size: 3.3 Kb
