A TIMES reporter was shown the other day a public document entitled “Order Book kept by the Recorder of the Town of Lima, Allen county, Ohio—W. McHenry, Recorder, 1842.” It is made of old letter paper, nine sheets of which are stitched together with a piece of linen cord. The title is written upon the front page in a plain hand, with some pretentions of ornamentation and the entries began on the second page. Across the top of the second and third pages are written the words—“Orders drawn on the Treasury of the town of Lima.” The orders are numbered consecutively, and the first six are to W. MCHENRY, for recording. The first three are for $5 each; two for $1 each, and the sixth for $1.55. No. 7 is to AARON LOOMIS, for removing nuisance, 25c.; No. 8 to AUGUSTUS MUSSER, same 18 ¾. No. 9 to JOHN KELLER, supervisor, $4.25; No. 10, same, $3 and Nos. 11 and 12 are for stationery, one to J. W. KING 88c.; the other to F. H. BINKLEY, $1.75; and No. 13 to H. S. KNAPP, printing $21. These thirteen are ?ooted up to $47.-86 ¾, being probably those of the year 1842, as those following are entered in different hand writing, and there is no other date til March 19, 1850. The intervening orders continue, quite a number for removing nuisances, ranging in amounts from 12 1/2c. to $1.75, and given to AMOS CLUTTER, NORTHRUP P. LOCK, PERSIVAL TRACY, FRANCIS HUGHES, JOSEPH CORTENEY, AGUSTUS MUSSER, J. H. RICHARDSON, HENRY RICHARDS, JOHN TITUS, ARMSTRONG & SATTERTHWAIT, E. WILLIAMS, F. OGIE, ISAAC SATTERTHWAITE and A. H. HITCHCOCK, J. H. RICHARDSON also job 30 cents “for notifying Council.” There are also orders for advertising and printing, making duplicate jury fee, and $9.13 to R. METHEANY clerk; and $12.43 to DANIEL MUSSER, supervisor. In this part of the book evidently referring to some term in 1849, there are eleven orders inscribed “witness in bitch case,” which must have been a case of some importance. JOHN and WILLIAM DAIZELL job $4; H. RIDENOUR, 50 cents; JOHN CUNNINGHAM, 25 cents; J. H. RICHARDSON, $3.50; THORN T. MITCHEL, $1.50; JAMES CUNNINGHAM, $1; ELIZA DAIZELL, $3; WILLIAM RILEY, 75 cents; SOLOMON J. F. BULLARD, 60 cents; and JOHN TUTTLE 75 cents. In 1850 the writing again changes; and the orders are dated; but many of the entries contain only the name and amount, with no record of the purpose for which they were given. The lion’s share of the corporation money in 1850 went to THOMAS HAMILTON, who got six orders amounting to $500. In 1851 only six orders are entered, No. 90 to ISAAC DAIZELL, as marshal, with no amount set out. In 1852 PETER E. SWEM got $27.39 in one order and $16.662/3 in another, “for ringing the bell,” and DANIEL MUSSER, $300; JOHN DAVISON, $53.43; WM. BARRACK, $26.57 and DANIEL MUSSER, again, $200 for “work on P. square,” Among the orders in 1853 are a couple to S. A. BAXTER, amounting to $16, for “leveling P. S.” There are again payments for “ringing the bell;” WM. CUNNINGHAM GOT $87 FOR TWO YEAR’S SERVICES as Recorder, and afterwards $11.60 as Recorder; and $50 for street timber; RALPH CHANEY got pay as Treasurer; JAMES WRIGHT, $20 as Marshal, and NICHOLS and WALDORF, $10, “attorney’s fees.” In April of this year are entries of orders of $1 each to WM. YOAKUM and THOMAS DIEZELL, I.P.O.P.B.,” and with them one to JOSEPH H. RICHARDSON, “Clerk P. B.” In 1850 HIRAM STOTTS comes in for “jailer’s fees;” PETER E. SWEM again for “ringing bell;” JAMES WRIGHT, for “services as Marshal,” and MATHIAS RIDENOUR as sheriff; and WILLIAM STUMP received four orders marked “G.M.S.U.P.S.,” whatever that may mean, and amounting to in ad to $595.87. In 1855 WM. CUNNINGHAM again appeared as Recorder and PETER SWEM (bell ringer) for the last time. The entries generally are without statement of the cause for which the orders were issued. DANIEL MUSSER got three orders, aggregating $185, and S. A. BAXTER comes in for twenty-two amounting to $370.82, and the names DAIZELL, HARPER, MCKIBBEN, STUMP and MITCHELL are seen. In 1850 S. A. BAXTER appears eleven times; the names before-mentioned again; and those of JACOB SHELLENBARGER, NEWELL, ELISHA MAGUIRE, F. ASHTON & CO., JOHN VANETTA and R. CHENEY. In May, 1857, again begins a numbering from No. 1, and the causes for which the orders were issued. JAMES A. NEWELL comes in as jailer, H. WATT, F. ASHTON, C. LINFERT, W. A. HOVER and E. CURTISS, as trustees; JOHN MELSHORN as Mayor; and E. MCGUIRE as bell ringer. Every line in this old book is interesting. The entries in different inks are plain enough, as are also some figures in pencil, showing division of one order. Such a record is a historical treasure. It is now in the hands of the City Clerk.
