BRICE HOME – The Remains of H. L. Brice to be Brought. Will Arrive in Lima Tomorrow. Friends of Deceased Shocked by the Unexpected Death. Was One of the Most Able Attorneys Belonging to the Allen County Bar, as Was Prominent Socially. The brief announcement made by the Times-Democrat last evening of the sad death of Herbert L. Brice, which occurred at Flint, Mich., was a sudden and unexpected shock to his wide circle of friends in both social and professional affairs. It was generally known that the condition of his health had occasioned considerable apprehension among his immediate friends and relatives at the time he went to the sanitarium last fall but recent reports concerning his condition were of an encouraging nature and all were hopeful of his recovery. The deceased’s brother, Jonathan K. Brice, left for Flint, Mich., last evening and will take charge of the remains, with which he will return to this city some time tomorrow. Arrangements for the funeral will not be completed until after the arrival of the remains. Herbert L. Brice was born at the old Brice homestead near Columbus Grove, and was the youngest son of the Rev. William Kirkpatrick Brice and Clementine Cunningham Brice. He came to Lima in the early days of his boyhood and attended the public schools of this city. After completing his common school education, he went to Princeton and graduated from that institution in 1887. Returning to this city from college he read law for a year in the office of attorney S. S. Wheeler, and a year later entered the Columbia law school, in New York. He was admitted to the practice of law in 1889, and in July of that year, formed a partnership with S. S. Wheeler. He was engaged in active practice from 1889 until his failing health forced him to seek recreation and give up his profession in the fall of 1901. He was one of the most able members of the Allen county bar, and was equally prominent in social life, being a leading member of both the local lodge of the B. P. O. E. and of the Lima club. He was also a life member of both the Hospital society and the Library association and no one was more active than he in securing those two magnificent institutions for Lima. For a number of years he was president of the Northern Ohio railroad company, prior to the absorption of the L. E. & W. systems by the Vanderbilt interests. Mr. Brice was constantly ambitious, energetic and industrious and after the death of his half-brother, the late ex- senator Calvin S. Brice, he assumed much of the responsibilities of the latter’s extensive interests. His responsibilities increased with the death of Mrs. Brice, and the constant attention he devoted to the affairs of the family, doubtless hastened the breaking of his own health that resulted in his death on May 23, 1902, at the Oak Grove sanitarium in Flint, Mich. He is survived by his venerable mother, Mrs. C. C. Brice, of west Market street, one brother, Jonathan K. Brice, of north Baxter street; and two sisters, Mrs. O. B. Selfridge, of west Market street, this city and Mrs. Edwards Ritchie, of Wyoming, O. Mr. Kirk Brice and Miss Helen Brice, nephew and niece of the deceased, will arrive here from New York tomorrow morning.
