Death of an Old Pioneer

SIMON CRITES, one of the pioneer settlers of Allen county, died at his 
residence in Amanda township, May 14, 1881, in the 74th year of his age, and 
was buried on Sunday, the 16th.

Mr. Crites was one among the best known and most respected of the pioneer 
settlers of Allen county.  He was born in Heidleburg county, Penn., October 
27th, 1808.  On the 17th of April, 1837, he came to Cedar Hill, Ohio, and on 
the 21st of June 1838, he was married to Mary Crites of that place, and with 
his wife moved in 1846 to Putnam county, O., whence in March, 1851, he came to 
Allen county.  He retained, until he had passed his three score years and ten, 
almost the strength and vigor of his early manhood, when suddenly in October 
1880, he was stricken down by a disease which baffled the knowledge of his 
physicians and confined him to his room and bed.  He leaves a wife and seven 
children.  The funeral services took place at the Bethel, the services 
conducted by Rev. Early, of Christian Union, and the remains of the deceased 
were interred in the new cemetery at Elida.
