"EARLY HISTORY OF THE COUNTY COMES TO MIND
With Announcement of the Death of Mrs. Freeman, a Pioneer Woman.
Represented a Family that Gave Prominence.
Deceased Was a Sister of Wife of Late Senator Brice and of R. W. Meily.

The announcement this morning of the death of Mrs. Anna E. Freeman, one of 
Lima’s most prominent women, will recall to the minds of many of the city’s 
oldest citizens some of the early history of the city.  Mrs. Freeman was a 
member of one of Lima’s pioneer families and the family name – Meily – has 
been associated with Lima history since 1845.  Mrs. Freeman died at her late 
home, 528 west High street, last evening at 7 o’clock her death following a 
brief illness and being due to the effects of a stroke of apoplexy which had 
brought her recently declining health condition to a critical climax on last 
Thursday night.  Mrs. Freeman had been unconscious throughout the day 
yesterday and the members of the family had been summoned in all haste to her 
bedside, it being regarded as impossible for recovery.  Thus the end did not 
approach unexpectedly, but its arrival was never-the-less a shock to the loved 
ones who were at the bedside or who were enroute when the messenger arrived at 
the homestead.  The profound and sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends 
is extended to those who survive this splendid woman’s demise.

Mrs. Anna Eliza Freeman was born in Mansfield, O. and was but a child when she 
came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Meily, to Lima, then a country 
hamlet, in 1845.  Lima was her home from that time until the hour of her death 
last evening.  She spent her useful life here and her husband, Cyrus Freeman, 
died here a number of years ago.  The only survivors of the immediate family 
of Mr. and Mrs. John Meily, now, are Mrs. Harriett Amelia Motter, widow of the 
late Hon. Isaac S. Motter, and the venerable George H. Meily, attorney at law, 
who is now a patient in the Lima hospital where he recently underwent a 
surgical operation for relief from blood poisoning.  Besides the parents, Mrs. 
Freeman was preceded in death by four sisters, Olivia, who was the wife of the 
late United States Senator Calvin S. Brice; Francis Josephine, who was the 
wife of Col. W. P. Orr, of Piqua; Mary Vanda Irwin and Sarah Elizabeth, who 
died in 1887 at the age of 24 years

Of the family left by Mrs. Freeman there are two sons, Brice Freeman, of 
Columbus, who is in the service of the T. & O. C. railroad company, and 
Winfield S. Freeman of New York, connected with the land department of the 
Canadian Pacific railroad company and four daughter, Mrs. Kate Harris of 
Middleport, O.; Mrs. Lenore McClintock, Mrs. Francis Whitebred, of Larchmont, 
N. Y., and Miss Medora Freeman, residing at the home here.

Arrngements are now being made to hold the funeral services from the residence 
on West High street at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon.  The service will be in 
charge of the Rev. Thomas Knox, pastor of the Market street Presbyterian 
church, and interment will be made in Woodlawn cemetery."
