R. W. Meily Falls Victim of a Sudden Attack. Heart Trouble Comes Suddenly to a Pioneer Resident. Was Lima’s Postmaster Under Pres. Cleveland. Leaves Wife and Two Sons – Funeral Will Not Be Held Before Monday. Stricken without a moment’s warning, with an unexpected attack of heart failure, Ringgold W. Meily, a pioneer citizen, who has been prominent among the older residents of the city for many years, died at his home 329 north West street, at 1:30 o’clock this morning. He had been in his usual good health and was seen about the city yesterday and last evening and the announcement of his death this morning came as a shock to the family’s wide circle of friends. Although 65 years of age, Mr. Meily was an exceptionally well-preserved man and his general appearance and activity made him seem many years younger than he was. Last night he had occasion to attend to some business matters down town and it was after 10 o’clock when he arrived at his home, between North and Wayne streets, on West street, and retired for the night. To his estimable wife there was no indication that he was not as hale and hearty as ever. Shortly before 1:30 o’clock this morning, however, Mrs. Meily was awakened suddenly and she noticed that Mr. Meily had risen from bed. She called to him and inquired if any—----------- But Three Survivors Ringgold W. Meily was one of a family of nine children whose names have been associated with the history of Lima for more than half a century. He was a son of John and Catherine (Fisher) Meily who came in this place when it was but a small village in 1845. John Meily, the father, was born at Lebanon, Penna., December 18, 1817, and died in this city, December 25, 1883. Mrs. Catherine Fisher-Meily, mother of the deceased, was born in Franklin county, Penna., July 25, 1820, and they were married at Mansfield, O., December 3, 1839. The elder Mr. Meily was part owner of a foundry in Mansfield but sold his interests there and came to Lima in 1845. Mrs. Meily died at the Meily homestead, corner of Metcalf and spring streets, several years ago. Of their nine children, but three are now living, they being Attorney George H. Meily, Mrs. Anna Eliza Freeman, Mrs. Harriet Amelia Motter, all residents of this city. The deceased members of the family who preceded R. W. Meily to the grave, in addition to the parents, were: Mrs. Olivia Brice, Gen. L. M. Meily, Mrs. Francis Josephine Orr, Mrs. Mary Vanda Irwin and Sarah Elizabeth Meily, who died in 1887 at the age of 24 years. Gen. L. M. Meily died in 1894. The eldest daughter in the family, Olivia, became the wife of the late United States Senator Calvin S. Brice and she followed her distinguished husband to the grave within about a year after his death. During the first administration of President Grover Cleveland, during which Calvin S. Brice was elected to the United States senate from Ohio, Ringgold W.
