Most Venerable Pioneer Resident of Lima – Surrounded by Relatives at Her Death. As the clock was striking the hour of nine last night the death angel visited at 573 west Spring street, when Mrs. Catherine Fisher Meily peacefully passed away. Mrs. Meily was one of the oldest and most honored pioneer residents in the city. She was possessed of a strong mind, and during her lifetime had met some of the most prominent men in the country, and with them has conversed on the great topics of the day. She was noted for her wonderful memory and her ability in discussing the important questions. Until of late the deceased has been in good physical health, although 86 years of age. Early the past winter her health began failing until about two months ago she took to her room at the home of her daughter, where she died last night. Sweetly and peacefully she passed into the death slumbers surrounded by the immediate relatives. Deceased, relict of the late John H. Meily, was born July 25, 1820, at Franklin county, Pennsylvania. Five years after her marriage together with her husband she moved to this city from Mansfield. At that time Lima was but a village, and since then has prospered until it became the booming city that it now is. The place chosen for their home is now a business block, where the Meily block now stands on north Main street. The home in which the pioneer resident formerly resided is now occupied by a son George Meily, on west Spring street. She was the mother of nine children, the eldest now deceased, becoming one of the best known women in America, as Olivia Meily Brice, wife of the late Senator Calvin S. Brice. The second child, Luther M., was also distinguished in his day, and became Adjutant General of Ohio, after a local political career which made him probate judge of this county. The third child was Mrs. Eliza Freeman, still a resident of this city, and these three pioneer children came here with their parents in 1844. Born to the union as Allen county children were Ringgold, former postmaster, and George Henry, both of this city; Frances Josephine, wife of Col. W. P. Orr, of Piqua, who has been constantly at the bedside of the deceased; Mrs. Harriet Amelia Motter, wife of Attorney I. S. Motter, with whom deceased has made her home; Mary Vanda Irwin, of Port Huron, Mich., and Sarah Elizabeth, who died at the age of 24 years. Mrs. Meily came from the stoic German parentage and during her early residence here became one of the charter members of St. Paul’s Lutheran church, during which time the services were held in the old frame building on Union street. She was very active in the church work at that time, and it is believed is the only surviving one of the band who gave Lutheranism its birth in Allen county. She was indeed very active and did much good with her work along that line. Immediately after arriving in this city the family began to prosper, and the late John H. Meily was clerk of Allen county, besides becoming prominent in the manufacturing world of this city. At his death he left considerable property to his family. Besides the Union block on the northeast corner of the square he left considerable other property. The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at three o’clock, at the late residence, with Rev. Bosart officiating. The services are to held Monday in order that relatives of the deceased may have time to get here in time to attend the services."
