Virginia Ave. Ashland, Ohio in PRESS 13 Sept. 1905 . Street Commissioner Beninghof stated that the bodies in the Markley private burying ground was in the center of Virginia Ave. which leads from Cleveland Ave. north to 7th St. east of Erie RR. and as long as it remained a burying ground the Ave. could not be opened. By a State law it is made impossible to be a deeded cemetery land for any such purpose. By consent of the Markley family what remained of the bodies was removed by the town workman, and placed in an Ashland lot donated by the Cemetery trustees, Commissioner Beninghof found the remains of nine bodied. One had been buried 70 years. Another 84 years. All had been interred in black walnut caskets. Note: today (1979 ) there still stands at Sherman & 7th St. Ashland, Ohio on the sw corner a marker beside garage up out of ground about 8 inches.
