The emotions of the people of Clear Creek Township wree deeply stirred over the issues involved in the Civil War, and sentiments were disclosed unhestitatingly and forcefully. Stirring demonstrations were held in various portions of the Township. At a night gathering at Ford's Meeting House, it was packed to overflowing. T.C. Bushnell, who organized the Forty-second Regiment, was in charge of the meeting which was designed to stimulate interest and enlist men for service. A company of soldiers used for their drill grounds a portion of the low land now owned by Arthur Fair, along the east side of the highway leading south from Savannah, just beyond the corporation's southern boundary line. On April 25, 1861, a rousing demonstration occurred in the Village of Savannah when the soldiers from all over Ashland County assembled there to be taken to New London, the nearest railroad center, where they entrained for Army headquarters. From all directions they came until the Village was thronged with soldiers, their relatives and friends. Horses and wagons, in large numbers, were scattered throughout the Village, and idle hitching posts were at a premium. There were stirring speeches, rousing songs, and ringing cheers; but in spite of buoyant spirits spurred by enthusiasm for their Country's cause, there were heartbroken wives and mothers as husbands and sons bade them "Goodby", climbed into the waiting wagons for their journey to New London, or mounted spirited horses and galloped northward from the little Village.
