As varied and important service as was rendered by any regiment in the field was the part of the Forty-Second Ohio Infantry, "Garfield's regiment," in the movements of the war of the Rebellion. It entered the field in Kentucky, December, 1861, it fought in Tennessee, it participated in the expedition up the Kanawha into West Virginia, it served under General Sherman (in the Ninth Division, Thirteenth Army Corps), and later under General Grant in that long series of movements by which at last Vicksburg and the control of the Mississippi was wrested from the Confederate government, then it served under General Lawler in the campaign of Western Louisiana, and it also saw service in Mississippi. Companies A, B, C and D were discharged at Camp Chase September 30, 1864; Companies E and F were mustered out November 25th, and four remaining companies December 2, 1864. The regiment bears upon its banner eleven battles, in which it lost 21 killed, and 343 wounded and disabled. Companies C, F and H were mainly raised in Ashland county, volunteers from the county enlisting also in other companies of the regiment. The lamented James A. Garfield was first colonel of the regiment; on his appointment as brigadier general. Lt.-Col. Lionel A. Sheldon was promoted colonel, and he commanded the regiment until it was mustered out. Among the battles of the regiment were; Cumberland Gap, Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, Magnolia Church, Champion Hills, Big Black River Bridge.
