Company A, McLaughlin's Squadron of Cavalry, was raised in Ashland county. The squadron consisted of two companies, A and B, which rendezvoused at Mansfield, and left for the field commanded by Major William McLaughlin, a veteran of the Mexican war, who gave his life in the service, dying from exertions and privations that his advanced age was not able to support. His death occurred July 19, 1862, on the Big Sandy river, Kentucky. His remains were sent home to Mansfield and buried with honors of war. The squadron was intended to form a part of the Sherman Brigade, but was detached from it at Cincinnati and was never with it in the field. Scouting, forced marches and skirmishing with the enemy formed the greater part of the first two years service of the squadron, during which time it served in Eastern Kentucky against Humphrey Marshall's rebels, and operated with Garfield's regiment—the Forty-Third Ohio—in the engagements of Middle Creek, Pikeville and Pound Gap; after that it crossed the Cumberland mountains, burned Gladesville, West Virginia, and captured a rebel regiment forming there under Colonel Caudle. In August, 1863, the squadron left Eastern Kentucky and became a part of the Twenty-Third Army Corps, marching to Knoxville, where it performed guard and picket duty, with a number of heavy skirmishes. In the Atlanta campaign it was a part of Kilpatrick's command, almost daily under fire, and sustaining heavy losses, particularly before Atlanta, at Jonesboro and at Macon. Many of Company A veteraned in December, 1863, and were furloughed home. After taking part in Sherman's last campaign the squadron was consolidated with the Fifth Ohio Veteran Cavalry, at Raleigh, North Carolina, and the consolidated regiment was mustered out at Charlotte, that State, November 1, 1865, receiving final discharge at Camp Chase, November 17th.
