The Ninety-Sixth Battalion, O. N. G., of Ashland county, the Ninety-Ninth Battalion, Stark county, the Seventy-Second, Henry county, and the Forty-Eighth Regiment, O. N. G., of Richland county, were mustered into the National service at Camp Chase, May 12, 1864, for the four-month service, as the One Hundred and Sixty-Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Under orders from General Heinzelman, commanding Department of the Ohio, it reported at Washington, were it was assigned to the First Brigade, First Division, Twenty-Second Army Corps, with headquarters at Fort Reno. District of Columbia. Early in June the regiment was ordered to the front, and moving via White House and Bermuda Hundred, Virginia, it reported to General B. F. Butler at Point of Rocks, June 12th. Two days later it took part in an advance on the Petersburg & Richmond Railroad, and the next day a part of the regiment was under fire, the men bearing themselves gallantly. June 16th the regiment moved to Wilson's Landing, and thence made several reconnoisances to the west bank of the James river. Many of the men of the regiment were detailed to help build Fort Pocahontas. August 29th the regiment was ordered home, and the men were discharged at Camp Chase, September 30, 1864.
