S. Veteran Volunteer Engineers FIRST UNITED STATES VETERAN VOLUNTEER ENGINEERS. This organization, Wm. E. Merrill, Colonel, was in its nature very like the Pioneer Corps, except that it worked behind the army, while the Pioneer Corps went ahead. Several regiments having served out the three years of their enlistment, their officers obtained a permit from the war authorities to organize an "Engineer Corps," and as the original design was that it should contain none but those who had served a term of enlistment, it was called Veteran Volunteer Engineers. Organized in the fall of 1864, it consisted of ten companies of one hundred and fifty men each. It was intended to have twelve companies, but the regiment, like some of the companies, was not full. The men of the regiment were armed as other troops and drilled regularly, in order to be ready for an emergency. In the winter of 1864-5 they built immense fortifications at Chattanooga and greatly aided our army by pontooning the Tennessee river, thus enabling Thomas to follow Hood, who had burned the bridge after crossing. The companies were scattered through the South, two at Chattanooga, one at Stephenson, Alabama, and several in Georgia. Their work was mainly preparing canvas boats for pontoon bridges, and making percussion-shell boxes, though they did some saw-milling and guard duty. They were mustered out of service at Nashville, Tennessee, in front of Governor Folk's residence, on High street, September 26, 1865.
