In September, 1861,Senator Sherman was empowered to raise a brigade for National service. Camp Buckingham was established on a farm north of Mansfield city, Richland county, and the work of recruiting vigorously prosecuted. By the close of November the brigade was fully organized. It was drilled by Major R. S. Granger, U. S. A., then on parole, a West Pointer, with twenty-five years experience in military life.
