It enumerated heads of families for 59 counties. This index of Ashtabula County Census enumerates the heads of families of a population of 7,382. It has errors resulting from numerous causes. Early census takers were not schooled in genealogy, nor often in spelling, their ink was indifferent, their pens dull or sometimes too sharp. Their script has been difficult to decipher. In this index, are the names found on the census film spelled just as they appear, or as nearly so as the census taker's intention could be discerned. Column 1 lists the heads of families, column 2 lists the townships in which he and his family resided, column 3 lists the page number on which the census record appears. An A on a page number indicates it to be the page following the machine numbered page, i.e., pg. 15A indicates the census page following the one machine-numbered 15. NOTE: Page 3A does not appear on the 1820 Ashtabula County Census film, however, thanks to the efforts of former president, Judy Magons, a copy of the original page was obtained from the National Archives and its contents are listed in this index. Township abbreviations are the first three letters of the civil township names. Page number and township are both necessary to locate the entry; it also helps locate a family in later, unindexed censuses. Cross references have been included in some instances; for names difficult to read, where it was felt your imagination could not supply a clue by which you would recognize your ancestor in the different names found on the census page. An asterisk (*) following name, denotes uncertainty of a name.
