Ohio 1862 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- January 1st. Wednesday. Very high wind, forenoon warm to cold. Baked pies and worked over a lot of butter and cleaned the dining room. Got the stove moved and the carpet down, got supper. Willie Farr called ,also Jane. This is the begining of a one year slice of the life of Lucy Orpha Parker Ward <1>, wife of Erasmus Darwin (Dar) Ward<2> who lived in the N.E corner of Ohio in what was then Lindenville, now called Wayne, in Ashtabula County. The text of the diary gives an insight into the day to day life on a farm during the Civil War year of 1862. You will be able to follow Lucy through everyday farm life of making cheese and butter, doing chores of cooking and sewing for her family to making and sending care packages to the soldiers of the union army. My purpose in publishing this diary to the internet is twofold; 1. To allow others who have an interest in local history and genealogy to access the information contained within it's pages, and 2. to satisfy my own curiosity as to who these people were and what became of them through the years. I assume no responsibility for any mistakes Lucy may have made in her interpretation of what she reported to be true to her at the time nor for any of my errors in transcribing her intricate and very tiny handwriting. I rely on those of you who read this to point out what you feel are any indiscretions and present me with the documentation to make corrections. All items noted in brackets <> are footnoted at the bottom of the page. The genealogy of those involved has been extensively researched and is or will soon be on linked pages. Please keep in mind that while Lucy was born, raised, and died in Ashtabula County , many of the events and people mentioned were just south of there in Trumbull County, Ohio. The following is from the 1860 Census, Wayne Township, Ashtabula County Ohio Living with E. Darwin Ward (age 28) and Lucy O. Ward (age 25) on 27 July, 1860 was thier son Willie <3>(age 5) and a hired man Henery Allen<4> (age 17). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- January 2nd. In the upcoming months I hope to have the second six months transcribed and published here. I also plan to add various links relating to the diary content including the genealogy of some of those involved in this saga. This page is not intended to be used in place of your own genealogy research. Soon I will be adding sources of reference material, but it is up to you to to find the facts about your own family. Most importantly, please keep in mind that none of the people involved in the diary are related to me or my family. This work was done out of my own curiosity and my desire to help others. Please email me with your comments. I would also be interested in recieving information regarding any cited material that will enable me to make corrections. Any negative, flaming email venting your rage at me for making a mistake will most likely go unanswered. This page would not be possible without the dedicated research help of Paul E. Phillips. Although at this point Paul and I have never met or spoken, we have been collaborating on this project for over a year. I also wish to thank my wife Lynda for her patience in what has become known among our friends as "Jim's obsession".
