Washington City Harpersfield, March 3rd, 1814(?) To the honorable Gentlemen of the house of Representatives and Gentlemen of the Sennet in Congress assembled We your humble petitioners beg lave to present by petition to the honorable Congressional body, the case of Mrs Hannah Lamont wife and widow to the late Capt. Robert Lamont of this place who was inhumanly shot and scalped by the savage allies of Great Britain, while he was accompanying Doctor Saml. McHachan truce bearer sent by General W. H. Harrison to their territory with money and medicine to provide for, and relieve the sick and wounded soldiers taken by the British at the defeat of General Winchester, on the twenty-fifth of Jany. one thousand eight hundred and thirteen at the River Aux Rasin. Therefore we your petitioners pray for the relief of the widow and orphans of the above named Deceased who were left, in indigent circumstances and were at that moment deprived of a Husband, Father, Protector and Provider, and launched into the World to be provided for by whom? By the government of their injured country, for whos wrights and liberties he was contending when he fell a wretched victim to savage barbarity on the thirtyfirst Day of Jany. 1813 on the bank of Miami River as will appear from the affidvet and certificate of Doct. Samuel McHachan. The circumstances relative to his death are as follows; when the Draughter Militia were called to join the Northwestern army under Gen: W. H. Harrison, he had the honor to command a company, from which, apart of the company then called from the third Regt. forth Brigade and fourth Division of Ohio Militia were taken, one of the mens circumstances were such as to render it extremely difficult for him to leave his family at that time and he (the Deceased) rather than the mans family should suffer to much inconvenience substituted in his stead and marched to the army where he suffered all the hardships of a fatigueing Winter campaign untill his death which hapned at the time and place afore mentioned at which time he had thirty Dollars of money, he had received a few days previous as part pay for the time he was to serve. Therefore we your petitioners pray for a remuneration of the money taken by the enemy at his death and such other provisions as your wisdom may direct you to make, and we your humble petitioners in duty bound will ever pray Petitioners Names John Lamont Parent of the Deceased, for Mrs. Hannah Lamont Capt. Robt. LaMont who is spoken of in the above petition accompanied Dr. S. McKehan who was sent by me with a flag of truce shortly after the defeat of Genl. Winchester to ascertain the situation of our wounded & to provide for their releif (sic). The expedition was Deemed very hazardous from the number of Indians which were kept in advance of the British Troops. Mr Lamont however volunteered his services for the occasion & being highly recommended was accepted. He was killed at the time & in the manner stated in the petition. I understand that Lamont was a Captain in the Ohio Militia but he served on the Campaign as a private. He was very highly spoken of by his officer for his intrepidity & Devotion to his countrys service. Given at Cincinnati the Head Quarters of the 8th Military District 9th of May 1814.
