Though I must not have looked at the films myself, here's what the Family History Library Catalogue for Salt Lake City films says:" Probate record v. The will of James Lockwood In the name of God, amen__ the fourth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty-six, I James Lockwood of the town of Ashtabula, and county of Ashtabula, and State of Ohio: Gentlemen being through the goodness of God of a sound mind and memory and calling to mind the mortality of the body and knowing that it is appointed unto man once to die I do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following: That is to say; first, I do resign my body to the dust to be decently buried at the direction of my Executors in hopes of a glorious resurection through the merits of Jesus Christ at the last day, and resign my soul to God that gave it; and I do say that I do bequeath my loving wife, Anna, her living as long as she remains my widow; -- And then to Stephen Lockwood and Edmund Lockwood two hundred dollars apiece; -- Also to Daniel Bartholemew one hundred dollars: -- Also to Hiram Lockwood (should he be living and return,) to share equally with the rest of my own children in property, as hereafter mentioned: But in case he never should return, to his children one hundred dollars; Also to Mary Gifford's children one hundred Dollars; And the rest of my property to be divided to my own children upon equal shares alike in all that is left after my debts are paid:--And furthermore it is my will that the girls should have all the household goods that belong to me for to make them some compensation for what the boys have had more than they; Unto my wife is to have one equal half of what she has made; and to Mille Smith and Caroline Lockwood one bed each; and the rest to be equally divided between my own girls. The following land records make for greater clarity in this matter. Here is a summary of the Ashtabula Co., Ohio, land record notes on the "heirs." Film 965,539 (SLC, FHL): Deed index shows: Lockwood Heirs 1851 v. 38, p. 599; v. 39, p. 513; v. 40, p. 431 -------------------------- Film 969,457 Deeds v. 38, p. 599: 1851. Philip and wife Anna, Garret and wife Betsy, Ornan Butler and wife Jemima, and Amos Green and wife Sally, and ELizabeth Owen, for $560 paid by Stephen and James, release (as heirs at law of the estate of James Lockwood deceased) unto Stephen and James 140 acres. v. 40, p. 431: Anna Lockwood of Ashtabula. $350 paid by Edmund and Garret releases to Stephen and James their heirs. (Also her interest in other lands belonging to James Lockwood, late of Ashtabula. Dated 1850. ------------- v. 39, p. 513: Feb. 1851. James and wife Caroline, Stephen and Louisa, and Edmund and wife Elizabeth, all of Ashtabula--sell to Aaron and Sheldon Harmon. ----------
