WIRES, WILLIAM WASHINGTON (N.F.) Died: December 31, 1917 Notes: ~ “The Old” Methodist church in Hockingport, Oh. was built in 1845, it burned May 27, 1965, destroying many of the church records. The pastor of the church at the time was my grandfather Delbert Okie Blake. A few years later, the chimney of his house caught fire, destroying most of the remaining records, including records of burials in the Old Hockingport Cemetery. What few records remain, are in the possession of my great aunt. (One of my next projects will be to gather this information.) ~ There is a stone between Charles Stone & Perry Foster Wells marked only J&J. ~ I found one grave on the west side of the cemetery, that at one time was a very tall, expensive monument. Unfortunately all that remained was the pedestal on which it once stood. I am assuming that it was the grave of a young girl, as the inscription read, “Her little feet on the golden street,. shall never go astray” ( I plan to go back to the cemetery, and look in the woods beside the cemetery to see if maybe I can locate the remainder of the stone. When I first started researching this cemetery, I was on the west side, and that some of the local teenagers had removed some of the grave markers from the cemetery and were using them for four wheeler ramps in the woods bordering the cemetery. I notified the township and they retrieved the stones and put up a fence on that side of the cemetery.) Note: These records are the result of many months spent at the cemetery gathering information, comparing them against prior records of this cemetery, including : the Harper-Greiner records (by Robert L. & Sherly Harper & Grace Jeffers Greiner), the Whiteman records( by Jane Whiteman), and the Peters records (by W.E. Peters). I have included information from from other sources as well, the 1905 Almanac of Athens co., Ohio, the 1887 Almanac of Athens co., Ohio, the death records of Whites Funeral Home 1903-1987 (by Barbara Harris), the 1820 Athens County, Ohio Census (by Jane Whiteman), the 1850 Athens County, Ohio Census, History of Hocking Valley. Legend: (W) = listed in the Whiteman records (F.) = grave found (N.F.) = grave not found (P) = listed in the Peters records (L.W.C.) = listed as buried in Whites Cemetery
