Athens County OhArchives Cemeteries.....Pioneer Cemetery - Partial Survey No More To Come ************************************************ Copyright. It is behind a farmhouse. You must walk through the back yard to get to the cemetery. Even though this cemetery is old and most of the stones are deteriorated, it is one of the most peaceful settings. It is like an extension of the back yard. There doesn't seem to be anyone living in the house now, but the last time we were there, the yard and cemetery were mowed. Aged 56 years. He was a man of undaunted courage and was a soldier in the Revolution. He was one of the pioneers in the wilds of Ohio, and shared the danger of frontier settlement through a long and bloody Indian War. He was a kind and affectionate parent." Nathaniel Sawyer "table" is from a slide taken by my mother in about 1940. The table is no longer standing, crumbled and the stone is lying flat, no longer readable. *Note: The above transcription was made in 1912; Aiken and Gregg put out a cemetery book in 1999 and they state that Cosette Jarvis read the Sawyer stone in 1912. I'm able to include the original transcription, taken from a book titled "Rome Township Cemetery Inscriptions Athens County, Ohio" written by and permission to reprint by the kindness of Nancy E. Bryant Aiken & T. Lee Gregg. Hatch, Elizabeth, died March 4, 1848, aged 60 years.
