Unknown who her father was but she had brothers William, George and Howard Grayem. They lived near Quaker City and then Salesville Guernsey County, Ohio. She married Jacob Phillips at Freedom, Ohio August 13, 1842. They were living near Quaker City in Guernsey County in 1848 when the B&O rail was laid down and Jacob worked on the grading. In 1860 they were living on the Holtz place and Jacob worked as a day laborer. During the Civil war Maria was living with her sister Nancy Graham and they lived on the David Graham farm. Jacob joined the army and was at Camp Chase where he became sick and then came home. He mustered out on July 31, 1863. In October he gave a sworn statement and applied for a pension. He was examined Nov. 15, 1863 and at that time the Examining Surgeon states that he finds him going into consumption and refers to his varicose veins. George W. Phillips, their son, stated that after his father was discharged, he came back to Sarahville and "we lived on George Sweeny's farm" and "he was not able to work a day after he came out of the army." When he died in 1867 Maria had nine children, with five boys under the age of 15. Her application for pension was denied because they could not prove that the disability was contracted during his service. Their children were Amanda, Sarah, John William, Lewis Jackson, George Washington, Isaac Wesley, Newell, Albert and James Howard. Maria was living in Iowa and stated in her Affidavit in 1882. "To all conserned would say under oath my husband never was able to do a days work after being discharged from the army unto the day of his death of which you have dates of enlistment and discharge. He never had a physician as he thought of no use. He says he contracted his disease at Camp Chase from exposure. My evidence except those two named are all in Ohio and very inconvenient to obtain. As I am an invalid and very poor financially. My husband was a great charge on me along with my family from discharge to his death. I am very unable to obtain more witnesses but if must be I will try as I am so very much in need and for the preasant will leave it with you."
