Also on the evening of the 22d, Sarah Penina of the same parents, and same disease, aged 6 months and 12 days. Truly the hand of affliction is laid heavily on the bereaved family. May Heaven bless the affliction to their spiritual good and finally bring them to join their babes where there is no more separation. On Sabbath morning, December 28th, of Lang Fever, youngest son of Clarkson Q. and Malvira M. Fields, of Bureau Co., Illinois, formerly of Belmont Co., Ohio, Aged 1 year and 7 months. After an illness of two weeks I was called to witness the death of this interesting little boy and while sitting beside his dying couch and seeing him bearing up under his afflictions with so much grace, and fortitude, while the destroyer was working its way we asked ourselves the question is this death. It was death. We saw the affectionate Father and Mother bending over its dying couch administering to its want; and trying to sooth it burning brow; but all in vain. Death had come. We watched the little sufferer as it lay on its dying pillow ga(s)ping for breath. I thought I could hear him say Farewell Father, Farewell Mother, Farewell Sister, and Brother too. I am going home to my Saviour; he smites and bids me come. Its spirit took its flight into another world. Through the parents are bereft of a son, I would say weep not for Meady he has found his reward and his refuge in heaven. For such is the kingdom of heaven. After a long and very painful illness, which he bore with the meekness, patience, fortitude and hope manifested only the true Christian. His youth and vocation gave him little opportunity of attracting public attention to his many virtues; but in the circle of his acquaintance, his kindness of heart, love of truth nigh sense of honor, industry, perseverance and amiable and affectionate disposition were the theme of general admiration and endeared him to all, but more especially to his bereaved and mourning parents brothers and sisters who loved and mourned for him as such as one only can be loved, mourned and remembered. The deceased was born in County Antrim, Ireland and emigrated to America in 1820, since which time he has been a resident of this township. In all the relations of life – whether as a Christian, a husband, a parent, a neighbor, or a citizen, his character has been without reproach. For a number of years an Elder in the church of his choice, (Presbyterian) he was industrious at all times to further the spread of Christianity. As a neighbor he was kind and affable; ever ready to obey the calls of humanity, his charitable deeds will be remembered for many a year by those who enjoyed them. He leaves behind him a very large circle of relations, and acquaintances to mourn his decease. He dies as died the summer day – not going out in fitful gloom, but with his last moments lit up by the glorious sun of Righteousness, calmly sank to rest, peacefully, hopefully, and with his Faith strengthened by a long life of sweet experience fully conscious that his life and interest in the blood of a crucified Savior would ensure him a safe passage over the dark river, and through the valley and shadow of death. May those weeping friends who stood about his couch when the dread change came over him, endeavor to emulate his Christian virtues, ever bearing in mind that; (poem follows) Belmont Chronicle, March 12, 1857, page 3. Few persons live so long or have so large a number of descendants. She was the mother of fifteen children, of whom twelve came to maturity. Her grandchildren number one hundred and one; her great grandchildren one-hundred and seventy-two; and her great-great grandchildren eight, making her posterity two-hundred and ninety-six. Of these many are still living and are residents of Ohio, Illinois Iowa and California. She made a profession of religion in Ireland, and in her various changes of residence in America showed that she valued the privileges of the people of God. Her last connection was with the Associate Reform Presbyterian Congregation of St. Clairsville; and as long as her strength permitted she was “glad when they said, Let us go up to the house of the Lord.” She had the pleasure of seeing all her children and many of their children member of the church of the living God. As she enjoyed many blessings and privileges in life, she was favored with freedom from suffering in death. There was a gradual decline of strength and one day departure from this world, assure hope, to the enjoyment of a blissful eternity; having experienced the fulfillment of the promise – “Thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace on Israel.” May her numerous descendents be partakers of her hope, and enjoy the answer to her prayers on their behalf. Allison Moore, aged 54 years, formerly of Belmont County Ohio. Belmont Chronicle, April 30, 1857, page 3. Died. On the 27th of March, in Arlington, Bureau, co., Illinois, Mary D. wife of Joseph Vanlaw, and daughter of Nathaniel and Rachel Haines of Belmont co., Ohio, in the 30th year of her age. The grave had scarcely closed over the remains of an infant daughter when it is opened again to receive the mother. How uncarchable (sic) are the judgments of god and His ways past finding out! In this melancholy Providence a devoted husband has had the desire of his eyes taken from with a stroke; and two little boys are left, throughout the trials and vicissitudes of life, to brave the dreary rounds alone, bereft of the tender care and unchanging love of a mother. Parents weep for a daughter, and brothers and sisters; and many friends have been deprived of the society of one whose mildness and amiability and affection had won their hearts, but the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away; blessed by the name of the Lord. While under the charge of medical men at the Lunatic Asylum in the city of Columbus on the 15th of June, he was suddenly and unexpectedly palsied and hurried away to answer the call of his master.
