Mead, aged 16 years. The deceased was a noble boy, the pride of doting parents, but was suddenly cut down in the morning of life. He was devotedly attached to his Sabbath School, and by his goodness of heart and correct deportment enjoyed the confidence and affection of all with whom he mingled. (Refer to his sisters graves; Virginia S. and Agnes A. and to his parents Phineas and Sarah Mead) Mead – On the 16th of February, Virginia S. Mead, aged eight years. Although so young, those who were with Jinnie in her last brief illness were pleased to hear her ask the way to and speak of the joys of heaven; as her tender spirit seemed to aspire rather after that blessed home than to remain on earth. (Refer to brother and sister’s graves; Rush C. and Agnes A. and to her parents Phineas and Sarah Mead) Mead – March 1, Agnes A. Mead, aged 10 years. Taken down upon her bed of death, after bidding her brother and little sister farewell, Agnes was not unprepared for the summons that called them so lately from her embrace. She knew that she too must die; and, as the hour drew near, she called her parents and relatives, one by one, to her side, bid them farewell, selected her favorite hymn, to be sung at her funeral, and then, in the calmness of innocent and child-like faith, sunk to sleep in the arms of Him who hath said, “Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of Heaven.” (Refer to brother and sister’s graves; Rush C. and Virginia S. and to her parents Phineas and Sarah Mead) The above were all children of PHineas and Sarah Mead, residing near Mt. Olivet, in this county. The fearful scourge, Diptheria, which desolated so many firesides, bore away from the embrace of affectionate parents these three interesting children. Their illness was very short, for the disease made rapid strides from the first moment of attack. What a blank in that domestic circle! Oh, how afflictive was it for parents to be called to watch at the bedside the wastings of disease; but who that has never realized a similar bereavement, can appreciate the anguish of heart when three loved children, of the interesting ages and promise of these, are taken by deaths bold hand from the scenes of “home, sweet home!” We feel to sympathize with these bereaved parents, but ah! To realize fully ourselves their deep sorrow, our hearts must be wrung by a similar bereavement! But then it is not the province of human sympathy to “bind up the broken-hearted” in such occasions of untold anguish. The Christian has “a friend that sticketh closer than a brother,” and the Christian philosopher “looks to Jesus, Since ‘tis He that hath bereft us, He can all our sorrows heal.” Then, afflicted one, in humble faith, Here bring your wounded hearts, Here tell your anguish, Earth hath no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal.” Belmont Chronicle, May 16, 1861, page 3 Deaths. How swift the messenger of death! On Saturday little Jimmie was out in the garden with his devoted grand-mother. This Sabbath morning we see his pretty corpse upon the cooling board. Surely we can read with great consolation the words: “Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of Heaven.” Jimmy has gone to his mission, and joined his mother, who had preceded him.
