A Happy Re-union. Wednesday, of last week, at the homestead east of St. Clairsville, for the first time in fifteen years brought around a most pleasant re-union of the family of John Stewart. The family is composed of the father, seventy years of age, and mother, aged sixty-three, and seven children – four boys and three girls and their children; three sons-in-law, Dr. D.R. Johnson of Ossiout, Egypt, husband of Maggie J.; Rev. N.E. Wade of Allegheny, Pa., husband of Annie R.; and J.M. Miller, Esq. of Cannonsburg, Pa.., husband of Mamie B.; two daughter-in-law – Mary J., wife of John E., and daughter of C. Hinkle, Esq. and Katie, wife of J.A., and daughter of Dr. J.B. Johnston. The descendants of this household are numerous, and so completely have the covenanted promises and blessings been fulfilled that no one, in all the large and multiplied families, has brought any kind of reproach upon the name which he bears, but on the contrary all of them have reflected honor upon their parentage. Three of the sons and two of the sons-in-law served with honor in the Union army in terms of from three months to five years. Dr. Johnston and wife have been missionaries to Egypt for the past eight years, and soon return to their field of labor. Of the boys John E. and J.A. are prosperous farmer located three miles east of St. Clairsville. Rev. R.B. is pastor of a congregation near Pittsburgh, Pa., and D.C. for the past three years has been engaged in the Banking business at Red Oak, Iowa. Besides the immediate family there were also present John B. Stewart, wife and son, of Springfield, Ohio, and Mattie Bell, sister of Mrs. John Stewart. The gathering of this family to the old root tree, was like the gathering of the tribes of Israel to the Temple. They come gladly, full of joy and radiant with expectation, knowing that a hearty welcome awaits them. All of them gathered around the family board laden with choice edibles, and the day was spent amidst continuous social intercourse, and religious exercises. On the next day the entire party visited the old homestead near Wheeling Valley, now the residence of Wm. R. McCune, where all of the children were born, and spent the day in greetings, congratulations, innocent amusements and in visiting their old friends, Grand-mother Robinson, W.E. Dysart and Thomas Duff, and in the evening dispersed, bearing with them the most pleasant memories of the occasion and wishing long continued life and all temporal and spiritual blessings for Mr. and Mrs. Stewart. “Lo! Children are an heritage of the Lord!” “As arrows are in the hands of a mighty man, so are the children of his youth.” John Stewart was born near Cadiz, seventy years ago, on what is now the Johnson Craig farm, and in 1810 his father removed to the place near East Richland, now known as the “Morrison Nursery,” since which time Mr. Stewart has been a resident and one of the staunchest citizens of Belmont county; he has been a subscriber to the Chronicle ever since it was established. May this family live to enjoy many such re-unions and at last join each other on the shores of the Beautiful River.
