One side includes James 1775-1843, Hannah (Gatchell) 1781-1839, Job 1824-1844, and Emanuel 1827-1844. I am a descendant of this James Sheppard. James's first wife Hannah died before him and he remarried. Hannah is buried here with him. Job and Emanuel are two of James and Hannah's children. Listed on the backside of this stone is James A. Sheppard 1835-1907 and Mary E. Freeman 1834-1927. This James A. being a grandson of James and Hannah. James 1775-1843 was very important to the Belmont County area. He has a small dresser that he hand made in the early 1800's that is kept on display at the Ohio Historical Society. He was a significant land owner in the area. There is a book that was written in the 1970's that details James's family. It was written by Lillian A. Sheppard and is titled "Sheppard Marshall and Allied Families."
