Ripley is located in Union Township, Brown County, OH. Turn North on Stephenson Street, about 3/4 of a mile on the left is a gravel road. Follow that road up to the top. There is a barnyard on the right at the top of the hill. On the left across the hollow is an old log farmhouse. It is thought to be the Benjamin Sidwell family homestead. Go through the farm lot to the east along the top of the ridge. At the end of the ridge is a fence. The graveyard is on the other side of the fence. As of April 2000 the property is owned by the people at the foot of the gravel road. Please check with them before trying to visit. Link to Website with pictures and diagram of Cemetery. Smith Born Oct 29, 1844 Died Aug. 24, 1934 Face of Same Stone Sarah I Sidwell His wife Born April 21, 1847 Died Jan 30, 1914 Comments: There are a number of field stones that obviously mark graves. There are reports from family members that the names of some of these maybe, Captain Burbage, Mary Smith sister of Danial Smith, Kirby Smith, Archibald Sidwell, Dallas Sidwell. As I trace down known graves for these people the ones that are left over are good candidates. Grave numbers have been added to this list by me so that I could include more historical information. Thanks also to the TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS OF BROWN COUNTY OHIO VOL 1 1965. Without the earlier transcription most of these stones would have been indecipherable. Grave 8 is my husband's grandfather. This stone is the most interesting. It is handmade from cement and fieldstone. His sons Clyde Smith, Richard Smith, and Pat Smith made the stone for him. Graves 9 & 10 contains the parents of Daniel Smith. Grave 4 contains Isabella Stephenson Sidwell. She is the mother of Sarah Isabell Sidwell Smith from Grave 9. Grave 2 contains Charles Stephenson. He might be the brother of Isabella Stephenson Sidwell. This is conjecture on my part, he could have also been a cousin or other relative. Grave 7 She is probably the daughter of John and Mary Ann. They are buried in Maplewood Cemetery in the center of Ripley. Mary Ann was Sarah's sister. Grave 6 Maybe the daughter of Archibald Sidwell and Mary E Jones. Archibald is the brother of Sarah.
