Gardner now located at Ft. Bliss, Tex., writes to his mother as follows: Ft. Bliss, Tex., July 5. Dear Mother- I received your most welcome letter today and was awfully glad to hear you are well. I heard from Aunt Annie the other day, also from Robert, he is up near the first line trenches, some where in a remout depot. I have been hoping that we would get to go? ? but it doesn't look that way at present. I just received my appointment as sergeant postal clerk of this regiment. It is sure great down here, but I wouldn't give a nickel for the whole state of Texas wrapped up in a parcel and delivered to my front door, but if I can do Uncle Sam any good by remaining down here I am perfectly willing to do so as I joined to serve my country and not to do as I wished, all the same I wish this war would soon be over so I can come back and see some the folks back home. You know I haven't seen Hamilton since the day I enlisted, November 29, 1913, and I should like to see the folks again. Is my old friend Earl Welsh still on the police force, the fellow that used to be traffic cop on Second and High when I was home. Maybe he wont remember me any more, but I do him. I got a letter from sister the other day saying she hadn't heard from Robert for a long time. We are out of luck for Bull Durham tobacco down here, they are sending it all over there and it's very little you can get here, reminds me of when we re in Mexico, I have seen five and ten dollars paid for a sack of Durham down there. We can get most any other kind of cigarette we want, but personally I enjoy the makin's and so do a great many of the other fellows, but we can't get it. Bull Durham has gone to war same as the Hamilton Boys. I would actually like to be in Hamilton again for a short while before going over there which I hope will be soon. I must close now, hoping to hear from you soon and often and especially when I go over there. Your loving son, Arthur E. Gardner, Postal Clerk, 5th U.S. Cav., Ft. Bliss, Texas.
