He was born in Urbana on Oct. 29, 1925, a son of the late Lee Roy Birt Sr. and Edna Watson Birt. He also was preceded in death by an infant brother, and a grandson, Addison Jacob Neer. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, E. Jane Birt, whom he married April 2, 1946; nine daughters, Becky (Robert) Smith, Jill (David) Stone, Kim (Ron) Chamberlin and Stacey Neer, all of Urbana, Sue Birt and the Rev. Tami (Cliff) Wenger, both of West Liberty, Gina (Jim) Dodds of Bellefontaine, Cindy (Tony) Moceri of Marysville and Stephanie Birt of Lewis Center; two sons, the Rev. Alvin (Peggy) Birt of Richwood and Jeff (Tammy) Birt of Rolla, Mo.; 28 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren, 6 great- great-grandchildren; and sisters, Marjorie Humble of Urbana and Lois Harmon of Bellefontaine. A graduate of Salem High School, he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed on the USS Latimer as a motor machinist during World War II. He worked at Willmans Furniture and the Urbana Daily Citizen as an advertising sales representative. He was the former pastor of West Mansfield Friends Church, North Lewisburg Friends Church and Jenkins Chapel. He was a great enthusiast of Big Foot. The family would like to thank the doctors and their staffs for all the care they gave to LeRoy. His children, the Revs. Tami Wenger and Alvin Birt officiate a funeral at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Walter & Smith Funeral Home, Urbana, where calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
