Carlson, age 82, of Dayton and formerly of St. Paris passed away at 3: 3:30 am on Monday, November 19, 2007 in the Dayton VA Medical Center. He was born on March 18, 1925 in Canby Minnesota, the son of the late O. William and Annie (Halverson) Carlson. Mr. Carlson served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943 until 1946. He was a gunner's mate and participated in the landing at Red Beach I the Gulf of Leyte. Upon his return to the United States he married Shirley Smith on October 21, 1949 and she preceded him in death in 1995. He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law: Scott (Vanessa) Carlson of St. Paris and Rory Carlson; five grandchildren: Kimberly (Ben) Pence, Jessica Carlson, James Carlson, all of St. Paris, Holly Carlson of Dayton, Michael Carlson of Bowling Green and their mother Carolyn of Dayton, OH; five great grandchildren: Zachary, Vanessa, Donovan and Victoria Pence, and Micah Carlson, all of St. Paris. Mr. Carlson is also survived by three adopted children: Les Gloege of Columbus, Alvin Gloege and Sue Gloege both of Minnesota, their sisters Arlene (Richard)Lesley of Marysville and Mary Gloege of Michigan. He is also survived by a sister, Fran Bierne of Renton, WA. IN addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Vi Manke Manke. He was employed as a telegrapher on the railroad and retired in 1985. Mr. Carlson also trained bird dogs and won six national bird dog championships. Mr. Carlson was a member of the St. Paris United Methodist Church, the Keith Cretors American Legion Post 148, the Philip Grieser Memorial V VFW Post 7645 and the DAV. Memorial funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2007 at 12:00 pm in the Atkins-Shively Funeral Home, St. Paris with Reverend Doug Upton of the St. Paris United Methodist Church presiding.
