He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army with the 3rd Army Tank Destroyers and was a Prisoner of War in Germany captured at the Battle of the Bulge. He lived in Urbana before moving to Springfield in 1960. He retired in 1980 as a manager of Madder Electric working in Springfield and Sarasota, Florida. He leaves his wife of 58 years, Alphretta "Freddie" Fleming; daughters, Carolyn Dewell and Jonica Hamilton; four grandchildren, Nicohle Hamilton , Brooke Hamilton, Krista Dewell , and William "Bill: Fyffe, two great grandchildren, Brittany Fyffe and Tyler D. Evans.
