Friend, 94, of Troy, passed away at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at the Koester Pavilion, Troy. She was born Dec. 19, 1913, in Pike County, the daughter of the late Pearl and Zalia (Nelfis) Basye. Mrs. Friend attended school in Pike County and was a former employee of Monarch in Sidney, Lear-Avia in Piqua during World War II and W.B. Marvin's in Urbana, from which she retired in 1962. She was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Troy. Survivors include one son, Harold Clinton (Sue) Friend of Troy; three grandsons, Steven (Carol), D. Douglas (Rebecca) and Brian, all of Troy; two great-grandsons, Derrick and Korry of Troy; five nieces, Fraya, Linda, Kay, Ruth, and Sis; one nephew, Robert; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her parents, Viola was preceded in death by her husband, William Friend, who passed away Aug. 29,1983; one sister, Margaret, who passed away at the age of six months; two brothers, Elmer Basye and Raleigh Basye; and one niece, Marcella. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Atkins-Shively Funeral Home, 216 S. Springfield St., St. Paris, with the Rev. Dr. Tony Carpenter of St. John's United Church of Christ presiding. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, St. Paris. Visitation for family and friends will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's United Church of Christ, 130 S.
