Alta Irene Eaton Gates, 84, a lifelong resident of Champaign County, passed 
away Sunday, May 10, 2009, in Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana. 
She was born in Adams Township, Champaign County, on June 27, 1924, a daughter 
of the late John E. and Florence N. Diehl Eaton. She also was preceded in 
death by her husband, Charles J. Gates; an infant daughter, Linda Jane; 
sisters, Minnie M. Eaton and Nellie F. Godwin; and brothers, Harry L., Robert 
C., Donald C. and Clarence D. Eaton. 
Survivors include daughters, Janice I. (Bobby) Hendrix of Ponte Vedra, Fla., 
and Marilyn K. Johnston and Connie L. (Joe) Trowbridge, both of Urbana; eight 
grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lucille Cupps of Troy. 
A 1942 graduate of Rosewood Harrison Adams High School, she was a member of 
Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. 
She enjoyed planting flowers, knitting, being outdoors and walking. She also 
enjoyed spending time with her family and her special cat, “Cubby.” 
Memorial services are planned for a later date in Vernon Funeral Home, Urbana. 
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer 
Society Ohio Southwest Region, 2808 Reading Road, Cincinnati 45206; American 
Heart Association, P.O. Box 15120, Chicago 60693; The Leukemia and Lymphoma
