She was born May 10, 1929, in Urbana, Ohio, the daughter of Leslie and Pauline (Farmer) Guy. She attended Urbana City Schools. After her father's death she was lovingly raised by her step-father Ned Walker who saw her through graduation at Urbana High School and admission into Ashland College. She was a graduate of Urbana University. Jean married Richard E. Gordon, from Mansfield, Ohio, on March 27, 1948. They were blessed with two children from that union: Richard E., Jr. and Kimberly Eloyce. Jean was the first woman of color to be named Executive Director of the Tri-County Community Action organization and through her position brought the Head Start Program to Urbana, operating out of St. Paul A.M.E. Church. Jean was a Teacher's Aide with Urbana City Schools for many years. She developed the tutoring program for the Caring Kitchen, Inc. Her love of children was her life. She founded the Gospel Prophets, a youth inter-denominational choir composed of 40 young people ranging in ages from 10 to 22. They sang in several states as well as the nation's capital and also recorded an album. She and her husband also founded a teen center for Urbana youth in the 60's. She was most recently employed at VERNON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME. She was a life long member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church where she directed most choirs, and served on the Stewardess Board, the Sisterhood Organization, and the Lay Organization; she was also an evangelist and served as president of the Missionary Society. She was very active in the community and was a member of the following community organizations: Links, Inc., The Eastern Star, and the Women's Progressive Club where she served as president. She was a member of the Saponi Nation of Ohio Native-American tribe. She was preceded in death by her father, Leslie Guy; step-father, Ned Walker; and two sisters, Charlotte and Nedra. She leaves to mourn, mother, Pauline Walker; son, Dr. Richard E. Gordon, Jr. (Dorothy), Springfield, Ohio, and daughter Kimberly E. Gordon-Brooks, Urbana, Ohio; granddaughters, Richelle E. Williams (Lawrence, Jr.), Kourtney E, and Donielle E. Gordon-Brooks; grandsons, Richard E., III, and Royston E. Gordon; great-grandchildren, Lawren E. and Lawrence E. Williams, III.; sister-in-law, Freida Chambers, Columbus, Ohio; god-son, Jerrett Gordon; special sister/cousin, Sheila Farmer Clay; special cousin, Juanita Arnold, Farnham and John Mosley; special friends, Peggy Shannon and Sherry Ream, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She will be greatly missed by all. The viewing will be Sunday, December 4, from 3-7p.m.; Home going service will be Monday, December 5, at 10a.m.; the viewing and Home going service will be held at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 316 E. Market Street, Urbana, Ohio, with the Rev. Dr. LaCreta Clark officiating.
