Richard Edgar Sr., D.C.M. crossed over to Glory on December 1, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center, Springfield, Ohio. He was born May 15, 1923, in Struthers, Ohio, the son of Martin Luther and Mae Snow (Fugitt) Gordon. He attended Mansfield City Schools and was a graduate of The Ohio State University. He received his doctorate at Case Western Reserve University School of Chiropody. Richard married Erma Jean Guy, from Urbana, Ohio, on March 27, 1948. They were blessed with two children from that union: Richard E., Jr. and Kimberly Eloyce. Richard retired from Mercy Medical Center, Springfield, Ohio where he was a laboratory director and Autopsist. He continued employment after retirement at The Urbana Daily Citizen, Littleton and Rue Funeral Home, and most recently Vernon Family Funeral Home, Urbana, Ohio. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and a member of the Prince Hall Freemasons Golden Square Masonic Lodge 23 of Urbana, Ohio. He also served on the Civil Service Commission of Urbana. Richard was a 3rd generation A.M.E. minister and a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church for 57 years. He served St. Paul as minister for over 25 years and helped chair the Martin Luther King, Jr. program. He and his wife Jean were the first black presidents of the P.T.A. at South Ward Elementary School, and together founded a teen center for Urbana youth in the 60's. Of all his successes his greatest passion was being a minister. He was preceded in death less than 48 hours by his beloved wife, Erma Jean (Guy) Gordon; his father and mother, Martin Luther and Mae Snow Gordon; and his brothers, Kenneth, Earl, Elton, Clifford, Russell, and Harold. He leaves to mourn, mother-in-law, Pauline Walker; son, Dr. Richard E. Gordon, Jr. (Dorothy), Springfield, Ohio, and daughter Kimberly E. Gordon-Brooks, Urbana, Ohio; granddaughters, Richelle E. Williams (Lawrence, Jr.), Kourtney E, and Donielle E. Gordon-Brooks; grandsons, Richard E., III, and Royston E. Gordon; great-grandchildren, Lawren E. and Lawrence E. Williams, III.; sister, Freida Chambers, Columbus, Ohio; god-son, Jerrett Gordon; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will be greatly missed by all. The viewing will be Sunday, December 4, from 3-7 p.m.; Home going service will be Monday, December 5, at 10 a.m.; the viewing and Home going service will be held at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 316 East Market Street, Urbana, Ohio, with the Rev. Dr. LaCreta Clark officiating. Interment will be at Oakdale Cemetery following the service. After the interment, the family will receive friends and dinner will be served at the Champaign County Fairgrounds 4H building. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Paul A.M.E.
