Hayes, 91, of Urbana, passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, in Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana. Thomas Edward was born July 16, 1921, in Canton, Ohio, and was a 1939 graduate of Canton McKinley High School. He attended the University of Cincinnati until drafted by the United States Army in 1942 to serve his country during WWII, where he was stationed in the Philippines. After returning from the war, he graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1946 and continued his education earning his Master’s Degree in Engineering from the Ohio State University in 1948. He worked as a Mechanical Engineer for Johnson (Penn) Controls in Goshen, Ind., and retired in 1987 as Manager of Applied Research holding 20 patents. As a hobby, he built four large reflecting telescopes. He donated to Middlebury High School, IN the largest, which contained a 15” hand- grounded mirror. While attending Washington University, Thomas met St. Louis born-and-bred, Esther Ruby Meiners, whom he married August 24, 1946. Thomas and Esther were the parents of four sons, Thomas is preceded in death by his parents, James Nelson and Pearl (Davis) Hayes; his wife of almost 65 years, Esther Ruby (Meiners) Hayes; his brother, James Hayes; and his sister, Mary (Hayes) Lavender.
