Prior to moving to Dayton in 1992, Delmar was a long-time resident of Urbana. He was born August 12, 1920 in Concord Township, Champaign County, Ohio, to Retta and Chester Hesselgesser. He graduated from Concord High School, Moores Business College (Urbana) and Ohio Wesleyan University (Delaware). Delmar served with the U.S. Army 28th Infantry. In November 1944 he was awarded the Purple Heart following enemy engagement in Germany. After his discharge from the service, Delmar worked for the Oliver Farm Equipment Company in Springfield and the Pennsylvania Railroad Depot in Urbana. In 1954 he took a position with the Urbana Post Office where he worked until his retirement in 1982. The most enjoyable of these years were his final seventeen, spent outdoors as a mail carrier for the same route in the south end of town, making many friends among the customers he served. In his retirement, Delmar's volunteer work with Mercy Memorial Hospital included performing clerical duties, driving patients to medical appointments and delivering Meals on Wheels. With training in the Laubach literacy course, he and Sarah greatly enjoyed teaching adults to read. When their church adopted a Vietnamese family, Delmar spent many hours in his home helping them to read and speak English. He was active for many years in the Urbana United Methodist Church choir, later becoming a member of the Belmont United Methodist Church, Dayton. Left to cherish his memory is his sister Jean (Tom) Comer; sons Mark (Drinda) Hesselgesser and John (Susan) Hesselgesser; granddaughters Brooke Hesselgesser, Ellyn (Greg) Case and Lauren (Joseph) Schippers; nephew Don (Carol) Comer; grand-nephews Daniel and Matthew Comer; and niece Brenda Richendollar. Delmar is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Sarah (Showers) Hesselgesser, and his sister, Irene E. Hesselgesser. Burial will follow in Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana.
