Homer Howard, 96, formerly of St Paris, died, March 5, 2013, at the Oakwood Village Care Center in Springfield following a short illness. Homer was born Sept. 27, 1916, in Princeton, Kansas. He was the son of the late W. Bruce Howard and Nellie V. Gilliland. Homer graduated from Lane High School in Princeton, Kansas. He received a BA degree from the University of Colorado and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941 and served as a B-25 Mitchell bomber pilot during World War II flying 93 combat missions over Africa, Italy, Corsica, Sicily and southern France. He was a 488th Squadron Commander and received 19 medals including the Silver Star, 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses and the French Croix de Guerre. He served 26 years in the Air Force and retired at Wright-Patterson AFB on Oct 31, 1967. Following his retirement he moved to a 119-acre farm in Johnson Twp. and raised Charolais/Angus and Simmental cattle. He was a member of the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans Keith Kreitor Post for many years. He always enjoyed their weekly card games and participated in many summer parades. He served as a member of the Johnson Twp. Board of Zoning Appeals and the St Paris Public Library Board of Trustees. Homer enjoyed bird watching, golfing and attending the 488th reunions. According to his wishes, his body was donated to the Wright State School of Medicine for medical research. A memorial service and burial will be held at a later date at the Spring Grove Cemetery near Millerstown. Memorial donations may be made to the St Paris Public Library or the Salvation Army.
