He was born on June 12, 1934 in the same home where he died. Richard was an honors graduate, class of 1952, of Christiansburg-Jackson High School where he was a member and president of the Mohawk Future Farmers of America Chapter. He earned Ohio's FFA State Farmers Degree and played varsity basketball. A love of his life was to watch his children and grandchildren play basketball. He married November 6, 1954. He and Delores raised a family of three. Richard was a prominent dairy and grain farmer all of his life in Champaign County. Since 1846, his ancestral family and his immediate family have lived and thrived in Champaign County. Richard was very proud of his family and farming heritage. His daughter and two sons presently live on farms being involved in agriculture as a means of livelihood. Since beginning his farm operation in 1955 with five milking cows, fifteen pigs, and some farm equipment, his legacy of farming and his love of John Deere equipment will be remembered by his family. He served on the Community Committee in 1993 and County Committee in 1996-2005 of the Farm Service Agency, and was a member of Farm Bureau and Farmers Union. He was awarded the Heritage Award from Farm Credit Service in 2007. He has been a lifelong Grafton United Methodist Church member and has served as administrative board trustee for many years. Richard is survived by his wife of 54 years,He was preceded in death by his parents, Worden and Alma Lucille (Beaty) Jenkins and one brother, William Jenkins. Charitable contributions can be sent to Springfield Regional Cancer Center, Community Mercy Hospice, 1343 N. Fountain Blvd, Springfield, Ohio 45504, and Grafton United Methodist Church, 2968 Dialton Road, St. Paris, Ohio. Envelopes will be available in the Funeral Home. Viewing will be held at the Atkins-Shively Funeral Home, 216 S. Springfield Street, St. Paris, Ohio, Monday, October 19, 2009 from 4-8PM. A service to celebrate Richard's life will be held at the Grafton United Methodist Church, 2968 Dialton Rd., St. Paris, Ohio, Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 11 AM with viewing one hour preceding the service. Burial will follow at the Newson Cemetery, Cowpath Rd., St. Paris, Ohio. Pastor Mark Atterholt of the Grafton United Methodist Church will be officiating.
