Wednesday, June 13, 2012 in Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana surrounded by his family. He was born May 29, 1938 in Champaign County, Ohio a son of Harry Vern and Evelyn (Spriggs) Karns. Nelson attended Urbana High School, served his country in the Navy, Army and Marines. He retired from Northwood Stone and Asphalt after 34 years of service. Nelson was a member of VFW Post 5451 and life member of the American Legion Pearce-Kerns Post 120. He enjoyed NASCAR, football, “Go Blue Michigan”, Cleveland Browns “Dawgs”, pulling pranks and spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and watching humming birds out his front window. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Elva (Reed) Karns, whom he married on December 11, 1973, children, Lloyd Reed and his wife Tonja of Walnut Grove, Mable Reeb of Urbana, Everett Huffman and his wife Anita of Waverly, Polly Huffman and Jeff Sells of Urbana, Bob Huffman and his wife Margaret of Urbana, Penny Miller and her husband Howard of Catawba, Karen Byrd and Tommy Merriman of Springfield and Gayla Mancini and her husband Anthony of Springfield, 22 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, sister Kay Jacobs of Urbana, brother, Mike D. Karns of Urbana an numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Joann Peltier and Linda Mae Karns. The family will receive friends 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Friday, June 15, 2012 in the WALTER & SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 642 S. Main Street, Urbana where funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, June 16, 2012 with Rev. Jeremy Stout officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Dale Cemetery.
